replacing lock ring on snap on impact gun

i have a 1/4 blue point impact thats lost the lock ring/friction ring to hold a socket.

i purchased one for an IR 1/2 drive for 2.00 a while back.

called snap on and they want 37.15+shipping

a 1/4 anvil should be a standard size or am i crazy? i cant find any other brand who makes a 1/4. id like to see if i can find an alternative.

this is the gun i have.
under repair parts they are not listed on the site but under the schematic i need #30 and 31 i do believe.

Milwaukee parts are reasonable, maybe a ring from an M12 Fuel 1/4" would work?

Just-Clips sells them in quantities of 3 for about $10. You may need a ring expander. They make a little kit as well with pliers but I don't think it includes 1/4" rings, just 3/8 and 1/2". Its an o-ring then the hog ring is squeezed over it

I sincerely doubt Snap-On is charging $37 for the hog ring, sounds like you got the price for the entire anvil assembly which may be how it comes since its blue-point.

Dealer should have it on his truck. Last one cost me $2.25 for retaining ring, o-ring, labor to install, and tax. That was a 3/8s drive.

i asked him if it was the whole assembly and he said no and broke down the parts

I usually just get the rings for free off the tool-man. I'm sure he's giving away the aftermarket ones, but they work.

I have put 'em on myself - no expander tool needed. Tool-man taught me this: Remove old ring from gun / replace o-ring if needed. Then, just lay the ring down on a hard surface. Put the drive end of the gun on it, centered. The push down hard / fast with just a tiny bit of wiggle to get it to start spreading the ring open and the ring will pop right on.

Wow, I replaced the retaining ring and o ring on my MG725 and the retaining ring was $2.20 with free shipping from Snap On. You may want to look elsewhere if the ring cost $33. Sorry it was for my 1/2" impact.

Make sure before you change it that you look at the groove real good. Sometimes the end of the anvil can distort or kind of mushroom and you will need a small file to clean it. If there is material there it can make the ring not be able to move in and out of the groove slightly. This can hold the ring out too much when on the anvil making a socket very hard to put on or when removing the socket can pull the ring partially out and bend it..
