I took the motor off of my 1919-20 JD wallace bandsaw last night and have run into a few questions. I started off just planning to clean it up and like a tar baby have become tangled in more and more problems.
First off can anyone identify the manufacturer of this motor? I know some early jd wallace motor were GE but this one looks different. It is missing the switch that later models seem to have cast into the motor housing. Instead its switch is porcelain and has a cast box in the side of the bs. I think this saw is an early version and/or maybe a factory version based on the switch and some of the other castings. The motor ran on 110v circuit for a minute or so, and might be a 1hp model if it is anything like what similar bs from jd wallace were given. As for the size it is much larger and heavier than an induction 2hp motor from the 70s that is laying around ( Maybe that is normal though?)
Next question what style repulsion motor is or was this? A prior owner has done some shoddy repair work and there are a lot of holes in the housing and parts that are not original, albeit pre metric and fairly old.
Only 5 of these holes where used, the four corners and one for the oddball part that holds the brushes
Here is the brush holder thing, it has different sized brushes,at different angles with different sized screws and springs. It is held in place by a bent machine screw that had been apparently relocated a few times. Thats judging by the extra holes drilled in the motor casing above.

The only markings on the motor is a 3 on the outer case and maybe a patent number on the inner casing that reads 1735337- B .
Google brings up something about a 3 phase motor powered dog track rabbit invention. Not really sure how that is related.
The motor ran great with just a squeaky bearing before I took it apart. I would like to replace the brushes and found a few places that custom make them. From what I have read different brush sizes can control the speed of certain repulsion motors. So I guess it would be bad to get the wrong size, but the parts that are on the motor don't seem like a great reference.
So can anyone fill in any blanks about this motor?
