I have a couple old dollies that I picked up at garage sales for cheap thinking I would someday find a special use for them. It’s probably been ten years and I haven’t come up with anything yet so they may be purged next time I clean unless you guys can suggest something. I was thinking about a portable rack for storing my 4-1/2” grinders, clamps, welding hood, etc. but I’m not sure how practical that would be.

I'm building mine into a wiring cart for wire spool storage, tools, connectors, etc. I can roll it out to the job instead of going back and forth.

Other ideas for handtrucks / 2 wheel dollies:

Mobile air tool stand. Long air line, a few frequently used air tools on the rack, adapters, air tool oil, penetrating and cleaning solvents in spray cans on a rack, etc.

Welding Companion Cart: Mount PVC Pipes (capped) for storage of your welding rods to keep them dry and contaminant free. Good place to keep your filler wire for TIG welding as well. Maybe put in a rack for holding C clamps, welding pliers, mask storage, magnets, welding jacket and gloves.

Mobile Shade / Car Wash Detailing Stand: Mount a small shop vac to the bottom, put in a nice long extension cable storage, hose and accessory storage. A couple of trays to hold car wash, rags, sponges, maybe your pole-mounted wash brushes in PVC tube mounts on the sides. Mount a piece of tubing on the side to place a patio umbrella on it to provide shade where and when you need it. Just that alone may make a very nice addition for driveway wrenching to have a shade where you want it.

Battery Charging / Jump Station: A car battery on the bottom with a battery tender connected to keep it topped off. Jumper cables wired to it permanently, ideally with a switch in line with the ground to disable any possible shorting. Mount a good sized battery charger and extension cord to do charging of batteries at the vehicle side. Include a tray to hold battery terminal cleaners, brushes, proper pliers, test meter and a simple test light.

Look around your garage and you can probably find several things that could benefit from becoming a mobile work station that can be moved to where you need it.

I like the idea of a portable welding/cutting torch cart.

if you don't have torches ...then it's a good excuse to get some :D

Funny, I never seem to have enough of those dollies & would never toss one out. :willy_nil

I like having them around for all kinds of things in the garage & basement. At least four dollies are under one short block, two engine blocks & one transmission. I also have one under a large window air conditioner & another two ready to use.

If you don't need them, at least take the casters off & mount them on something else you need to move once in a while.

My 'something to build someday' list includes mounting the buzz box welder on a two wheel hand truck. Welder would sit on the bottom plate where you would carry boxes and would have a strap securing it to the hand truck. It would have a semi-circle hose holder for storing the welding cables and power cord. Now, after reading this blog, it will have capped PVC pipes for welding rods. Someday!

I had one of those 2 way ones that have the castors on the back so you can take the handle off and slip it on 90 degrees and use it for a cart of sorts. I ended up turning that into a generator cart, since I was having an awful time finding a portability kit for mine. Works great!

Where I work, they have a third leg (with a wheel) on the front and have their welding bottles on them. They also have a tow arm so they can use their buggies to pull them to the work place if they need to weld.

Right now is the perfect time to get patio awnings. I was able to pick up 7' umbrellas for $5 each at Rite-Aid. I attached a 2" diameter PVC pipe to the upright on my handtruck and stuck the shade post in that. It works surprisingly well.

I added a bolt on fixture that allows me to transport rear axles when shopping the salvage yards. Our local yard supplies wheelbarrows, but it's really hard balancing an axle in one of those.

I don't use it often, but real handy when I need it.

I made a bolt on fixture to use it as a trailer dolly. It works great for moving around small trailers by hand.

If you had several of these and some clean plastic 55gal barrels you could make a train you pull with a four wheeler for the kids.

If you have a really small MIG/TIG welder you can strap your gas bottle to the front, and weld a small platform on the back for the welder. Add some hooks on the side for cables and hoses.

I have seen guys at the larger swap meets put steering systems on them with a steering wheel & fold out cargo boxes to carry their goodies around.

I've thought about converting one into a small light duty forklift for lifting things up high to store on shelves at the 8' height. Yeah, I want some bulkhead storage in my garage.

add a motor, chain, and clutch to the axle, pin the wheel, and make a pusher cart for a bicycle...the guy that made the one in the pic (not me) was known to do 50+mph with it before he wised up...

One of my best tool investments was a hand truck from HD when as a newlywed I moved for the first time. 27 years later I still have that hand truck and it is beat to heck. also have several more.

I turned one into a dump-able two wheeled garden cart. Way easier to move heavy stuff than a wheelbarrow. Just this year I put it out free on CL. I also used another one as a rock cart. Use the platform to lever up rocks, lay the cart down and attach to the hitch on my garden tractor. Moved some incredibly sizeable rocks that way. Sorry, no pics, still in Photobucket mode.

Oh, I also move furniture with them. . .
