So I have an old Craftsman compound miter saw. Replaced with a new sliding miter saw.

Works well enough, but I no longer have a use for it and it's not worth enough to bother trying to sell.

Started a thread about the possibility of using it for metal cutting (https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/miter-saw-as-chop-saw.489360/) but I don't think I want to go that route.

Is there any other use for this thing? Motor turns at 5000rpm and the label says 15a. Could I use the motor as the power for some other, possibly homebuilt, tool?

Could use a belt saw but I don't think this is the right application.

Something useful might be a belt or disc sander. 5k rpm seems a little fast but I guess I could gear/belt down the speed.

I hate to toss/scrap a perfectly good tool that has served me well, but it's been in my way and needs to go away somehow.

Any ideas?

What about turning it into a saw sharpener.
With the correct grinding wheel, a jig to hold and index the blade and an adjustable stop, it shouldn't be too difficult to put together.

I have always thought that a miter saw would make a much better metal cutting saw than most metal cutting chop saws. They spin to fast to use the toothed blades, but I don't see any reason you couldn't stick an abrasive wheel in there. If it has a plastic blade guard, it might get a little sad, but meh, who cares.

I had a 14" Makita that someone stuck an abrasive blade on. Had is the operative word. The grit pretty much ruined it and trying to change the angle of the cut took way too much effort due to the abrasive grit going in every joint of every moving part.

There's a reason why the vise in actual metal cutting abrasive saws is where you change the angle of the cut. I hate those stupid saws also.
