Good morning.

I am about to replace the garage door on our house. It is a 15x7 opening on the side of the house and is under the bedrooms. Given this, I am not looking for a fancy door. Steel panel door that is well insulated is just fine. I am not familiar with the major brands of garage doors except for Overhead and Wayne Dalton. Please let me know if these are reputable brands and other brands that I should look into.

Thanks!

Dan

I put in a Buildmark. Very nice quality, insulated, steel on both sides. Looks just as good on the inside as it does the outside. Some of the cheaper insulated doors look ugly (imho) on the inside, the foam is just glued to the door and can get damaged.

Okay. I have call reps from Overhead, Wayne Dalton, Amarr, Raynor, and Clopay. Wayne Dalton offered the most competitive price when comparing features, warranties, openers, R-Value, amongst other things. If LOML, aka the Secretary of the Treasury, approves, I think I will be going with the 8300, but still debating the iDrive vs. the Prodrive with a belt. Noise is a concern given that it is just below the bed rooms.

Not sure what part of the country you are in, but I would not buy a garage door that isn't insulated and steel on both sides. I have both types, and there is no comparison. I live in the south so winters aren't the big concern, but they muffle noise and heat very well also.

As for openers, STAY AWAY FROM WAYNE DALTON. I cannot speak to their doors, but when I was researching, I found lots of folks that hated idrives. By comparison I've yet to hear anybody who is unhappy with their Liftmaster 3800 (comparable to idrive, but better quality). I have a 3800, and won't ever buy another conventional opener if I can help it.

i also have Raynor doors with insulation and metal on the inside. i did not want to leave the foam exposed for many reasons ie: bugs ,chemicals eating it etc. plus easier to keep clean. i am very happy with them. i also got the rails with the white coating much quieter and wont rust. good luck

Raynor is made locally here. Good products. Wayne Dalton used to be made locally. Not as good.
I bought CHI for my shop. Insulated and steel clad inside and out. Great doors so far.

I have a Wayne Dalton 8X18 with the idrive openner and have had no issues. I know there were some issues with the early idrives but I believe those have been fixed. My idrive is over three years old and works like a charm. It,s quiet and fast compared to my previous Genie openner. I do read alot of positive reviews on the Liftmaster 3800 and would advise to purchase a Liftmaster openner if you are considering a highlift door. That is the one draw back to the idrive is that it cannot be converted to do high lift. The Wayne Dalton door itself is good quality and I have been pleased with it.

I'm having some doors put in soon and I am going with Amarr. They have the best insulation and are good looking as well. They are made in the USA and look like they are pretty stout.
