I’m guessing a chain cutter of some sort, but don’t know for sure.

It’s only stamped Japan and the number 4. The bolt is 11/16” OD.

Appreciate any information.

What's weird is the orientation of the spiting edge, is it able to be rotated 90 degrees? That's more typical of a nut buster.

I see the cutter is prevented from rotating by the slot - is there another slot 90 degrees away from the one we can see?

Could it be for cutting rebar?

I have never used a nut splitter.

I see them at estate sales all the time. Are they a tool worth having?
I needed one once, tried a snap on that I picked up at an estate sale AND boom - it shattered. Probably user error. That said - I'd probably grab another one if it was cheap.

If you have the blue wrench then nut splitters aren't needed so much imo.

But, if its a place where the heat can't be tolerated and there is room, then there's a possibility.

Like Matt posted the torch, cutting air tools and sawzall have made the use of nut splitters pretty rare. It's been a couple of decades since I used one.

I've used a nut splitter similar to that several times, but never seen one with the splitting edge orientated that way. Not even sure how that would work like that if it can't be turned 90°.

I bought one when I was a teenager,in the late sixties.

I remember that the anvil could be indexed.

Don’t know for sure, though, as it exploded the first time I used it.

I have a Matco USA nut splitter. Identically offered under other brands. Never split a nut, but one time I used it to cut all thread. I think it was 3/8. Worked well for that.

I have a New Britain that was my grandfather's and it's been in my tool box for 40 years without being used once. I'd reach for the air chisel or the cutoff before I'd use it. If you really want one in your toolbox, I wouldn't go out of my way for one unless you can get it for next to nothing.

I have 2 nut splitters a KD 715 and a Snap-on NC52. Used mainly on machinery when a fine thread nut strips. Gear hubs held on with nuts. The nut spins on the stud. The stud cant be replaced because its a one off European design. The nut splitters work well. Not sure about the one the OP is asking about, blade goes the wrong way.

Good read, thanks for the schooling.

I think I’ll torque it down on a piece of rebar & see what happens.

If it survives, I’ll modify and use it as a nut-cracker.

Not going to do anything on rebar.....just use a bolt/nut. A nut can deform then tear open where as a solid piece of steel isn't going to really do much.
