So I picked a really nice s4 and with a load left on it overnight it is leaking around the outer rod from the packing I assume. Is there a good to reseal it or do I need to dig into and do full rebuild ? If so has anybody done a full rebuild on one these that they might give me some pointers ? Is it straight forward ?

You can try tightening the compression nut, This will put more squeeze on the Rod surface that might address the leakage, Then again... It might need complete service. The S-4 Jacks arent the easiest to Rebuild, They require some specialty sockets to correctly service, These tools arent available and need to be made.

OK thank I will check it out. Do I just need a pin spanner to tighten the compression nut ? How tough is to build the specialty sockets ? The rest of the jack is really nice seems like I should go through it so stops dripping on the floor ? I assume it is normal for the rod and compression nut to look beat up ?

You can adjust the outer compression nuts with a pin/hook spanner, inner compression nuts need to work around the Rod. The reason the compression nuts look beat up, is generally because people use punches on them, this not only damages nut, it also deforms them and can cause damage to the rod surface.
