Researching an 60 amp 240v 3ph outlet

Hello I am new to the community and am looking for information on running a power supply or establishing a 60 amp 220 volt 3 ph outlet from a 200 amp 3 ph service to run the distance of aprox. 260 ft to run a electric motor ...wondering if #4 wire with a #6 neutral would be heavy enough to accomplish this application with out damaging the motor if the motor start up draw was 58 amps? Also what would be the voltage drop using #4 wire running 260 ft from what I have researched it would be around 7-8 percent also the start up draw from the motor would be increased looking to find out what the level would be increased to Thank you for helping find the answers

The Hp rating of the motor is needed to size the conductors before considering voltage drop.

If you are only running a 3 ph motor, you will not need a neutral.

The “outlet” you refer to – is it a plug and receptacle or simply a hard-wired connection point to the motor?

Where will the motor starter be located?

Motor will need a disconnecting means.

You will want to run Aluminum wire for that distance due to cost.

Picture of motor nameplate would be preferred.

I'm going to WAG here for discussion purposes that your motor is around 30A Full Load (FLA) given 58A at the clamp-meter upon startup...generalizing, 30A * 240vac = 7200W / 750 W/hp ~~ 9.6hp. Yes I am ignoring several factors ...SQRT(3), 745 W/hp, etc.

Do you have a 10hp motor?

The HP rating on the motor is 25 HP and I am running 4 wires to a receptacle and plug from the plug to the motor their is a discount switch and starter before the motor i don't have a picture of the motor plate at this time.

25 hp @230vac 3ph requires #2 xhhw AL w/o considering voltage drop.. At that distance I would run a minimum of #1 xhhw AL – possibly 1/0 if high inertia load. What type of load is being driven?
You can use a 150A CB at the panel. Circuit will require a #4 ground wire.

The receptacle and plug needs to be rated for 25 hp minimum. 30hp is the closest rating you will likely find. Rating should be 30hp @240vac, 3 ph, 100a, 3 pole, 4 wire, pin & sleeve style.

How stable is your voltage supply? Can it support this additional load? And the start-up current?

Verify the wire size range that the receptacle can accommodate. #1 is the largest conductor size I see for a 100a Arktite.

No the motor is 25 HP i believe and the start up amperage is 58 amp according to motor tag

Probably full load amps = 58A.

Start-up would be much higher and usually there is a code letter on the nameplate to calculate the approximate value. Yours could be ~365A depending upon how stiff the supply is.

Thank you mm08822 for your help i will have to plan accordingly before I move ahead with this project. I had originally planned on using #4 copper because i had this available to me but will have to rethink this to use this kind of HP.

you dont need a neutral for a motor.

what other loads do you have on your service?

Many PoCos have limits on motor HP... have you checked with them to see if their transformer and supply can handle this motor load?

I don't think NEMA rates their plugs and receptacle for HP. They have THREE different configuration, for 3 phase.
