So I'm having a pair of double-paned IGU's replaced this Thursday to the tune of $936. Not the point but worth mentioning I guess?
At any rate.. last summer we had the typical humid window sweats going on. Luckily every lower windows sill is granite, so no chance of rot. However that got me to thinking, you;ve got a 53x68" window right? Double-paned because you wanna be energy efficient, yeah? What about the frame? Plastic window frames with open voids between themselves and the wooden framing. Hot and cold air pass through thin layers of plastic fairly easily. Why the hell are those not filled? Or thicker?
Turns out, (according to the window guy) IGU's expand and contract like most things and if the frame was stiff the glass would likely shatter. Anyone heard this before? Thermally it makes sense but still begs the question.. if you're going to drop 500 clams on a window because it's super efficient, why is it ok for the frames to be uninsulated in some fashion?
