I would like to use some 100% solids resin epoxy I have to do the stairs (not vertical areas though).

EpoxyMaster said they cannot reccommend any base coat for their product except their own epoxy basecoat itself.

I noticed this comment on another product (http://www.originalcolorchips.com/frequently_asked.html#question_20) and was wondering if this procedure might be suitable for the initial base coat?

APPLYING ON WOOD: You will need two coats of basecoat epoxy when coating wood. Fill in any seams with a self-leveling sealant or patching compound. Prime the surface with basecoat epoxy thinned with 8oz of warm water per gallon. This thinned coat will soak into the wood, creating a bonding agent for your second-layer of basecoat. You would then apply your actual basecoat and chips, followed by the clearcoat as normal.

We have a unique epoxy basecoat/primer that has a special flexible/bridging agent in it which is exactly what you want for wood stairs or wood floors (works on hairline cracks in concrete floors too).

Here is a link to a GJ member using our products:

Here is a link to the basecoat/primer.

Any suitable 100% solids epoxy coating should have no problem adhering to our product as long as you coat once tacked off, not exceeding 24 hours from start.

Thanks! I am only epoxy'ing the flat stairs... no vertical surfaces. The toe-kick areas & other vertical surfaces will be primed & painted a different color entirely. I think I may do a test section with the epoxy I have left and see how it sticks.

Our primer/base coat is not specific to vertical surfaces.
We recommend it for wood as it fills small voids and flexes more than common epoxy.
