Well I started the "Heartbeat of America" garage build thread about 2 months ago. I had a poor plan at that point jumped in and ended up having to stop and start over.

The garage is a 22Wx24D detached. It has a 30 Amp Feed going to it with a 4 breaker sub panel (20 amps each). It had just 4 little screw in light bases and shelves around the whole thing. There was no ceiling (just 4 collar ties) and OSB with R13 behind it on all the walls. 2 Dedicated outlets on the left wall, 2 outlets on the back wall, and 1 outlet on the ceiling for the door opener.

Here is a pic the day we moved in with the chevy that was totaled 3 days later in the garage

I started by ripping all of the shelves down and painting all of the walls white. 2 coats of oil based exterior paint

After painting I put my bench in the back corner and hard wired in my car headunit and flush mounted 2 5-1/4" speakers in the back wall.

I then started insulating the rafters with R13 so it would leave an air space. I realized that the collar ties were all improperly spliced and it was a pain in the *** to insulate the rafters. I also realized what a pain it would be not having an outlet on the right side of the garage. Thats when I started over.

I will upload pictures of this tonight when I get home.

Chevy was totaled driving home from the dentist.

For heating I plan to use a electric oil filled radiator running 24/7 to just keep it above freezing. I have a 18k BTU Ventless I will use when I am out there to kick up the heat. I don't get to spend nearly enough time in the garage so the ventless will do for now. I can upgrade the heater later should I need to. I am putting a run of 10/3 romex over in the one corner just left lose near the panel just incase I decide to go electric.

I want to make the garage so everything can be changed easily. The OSB Can be unscrewed, and there will be access into the attic large enough to fit 8' 2x4's or pipes up into it should I need to do anything up there.

Well I hung the last 2x6 that I know how to hang up today. Ill get to the question a little further down with a pic.

As you can see I have a 100 CFM Bath fan (clear out minor smoke/fumes if my buddies and I want to have a cigar in the winter or something. Figured the ceiling was open so why not put one in now)

IMG_20120925_170819.jpg

I have 2 more lights I need to hang up further back but the front two are up (need to tighten up the cords) and the drop light is up for now.

IMG_20120925_170740.jpg

Now here is my question. When doing a ceiling like this. How does one sheath it into the corners? Am I missing some needed framing members? Here is a pic of the area I am talking about.

IMG_20120925_170758.jpg

I have the ceiling joists going as far as I can go, and the jack joists as far as I can go. I could fit maybe 1 more jack joist if I go with a 2x4 but thats it. anyone have any diagrams on how this should be framed? or am i just not seeing how the sheets will fit in there and I am done for now?

You can run a straight edge off both sides, into the corner. Then run a joist from your hip rafter to corner. You may have to add more inbetween depending on the gap that is left.

Gotta love when the rafters have a odd ball 12" Spacing in there every now and then, Almost done with the insulation. Any tips on things to do before I seal up the ceiling (I will still have a hatch but this will be the easiest time to do so.)

Looks good so far.

I'm sorry think I just read it wrong but .. was the Chevy totalled WHILE it was in the garage?

What are your plans for heating?

I got a crew cab F150 - 08 with low miles, 4x4 and V8.

Tomorrow the woman works the late shift. I will be able to sneak away from the house projects and get this insulation wrapped up. I keep looking for cheap wall cabinets on CL but haven't seen anything worthwhile.

Got the insulation done, lights up, trim on windows, and everything hung up. That's it for now til I get a new job and I can put a finished ceiling in. I got laid off Friday.

You could run a diagonal joist and jack into it or you could run one more parallel joist and then tee into that herringbone style until you reached the point on the hip rafter that is level with the new ceiling.

I don't think you will need nailers in the corner if you hang the flat ceiling first and then bump the tray part into that.

That is going to be one handsome wall and ceiling combo. I'd run some recessed puck lights around the tray.

haha, no puck lights here. The garage has a horrible floor and is more or less just a getaway on the weekends to putz around.

I figured out the corners of the ceilings I was able to use 2x3 studs and get almost all the way in. Job interview on thursday so maybe my severance pay can end up going to my ceiling and my savings account instead of living off of it.

Haven't updated in a while. All the insulation is in. Pulled 60 amps to the garage to replace the original 30, added a 220 outlet. And started to finish the ceiling with fiberglass panels. Should get a chance to work out their today so ill take some pics.

I keep getting closer to finishing this. It's driving me nuts that it has drug on this long.

Looks like you're transforming the garage to new life. Nice work!

Curious whether you're planning ahead for 220volt electrical you might need - - - say air compressor in the corner? Outlets in general look pretty sparse so it'd be good to install more while the ceiling is opened up so you could fish tape down to new wall outlet locations. Also, lots of shops have hanging retractible shop light/electrical source . . . will the garage door opener circuit handle that?

Plan on running any air lines like surface mount black pipe?

Good luck with rest of garage, and need a pic of your new pickup!

I have nothing that is 220 but I placed the heater outlet on the wall (heater has a 6ft cord) and then I can use it for other things.

I have 2 outlets on each wall except the one on the parking side of the garage that has 4 in one location.

I also have power outlets in the ceiling for a drop light and a cord reel.

Air lines if I do them will be surface mounted.

Picking up the heater from the Ebay Seller in an hour. its a Cadet "The Hot One" 5000 watt heater. Figures its 65 degrees today. Ill do a separate review of the heater once it gets cold again. I can't wait to have real heat in the garage. Probably will lead to me finishing it up faster.

Heater is working great. I need to put up one more small piece on the ceiling to finish the flat part with frp panels. I'm not 100% in love with how it looks but it'll keep the insulation from catching on fire. Next weekend ill knock out the sloped sections and be done. Only reason I didn't finish the flat part is I need a new saw blade and I ran out of time. Family duties call.

Forgot the pic
