Restoleum paint question

I'm working on a project for my son's class. My kids attend a private school. Every year to help raise extra funding, they put on a silent auction at a museum here in town. Most of the items are either donated or made by the classes (parents with help from the kids). Our project involved painting a wash tub.

It was galvanized metal. I used TSP to was it down prior to painting. I then lightly sanded it, primed it with rustoleum primer, sanded, primed again and sanded. I them put several top coats of rustoleum colour on top on the primer. It actually turned out very good. Nice gloss and fairly thick with a very smooth finish.

They are going to put hand and foot prints on this tub. What I need to know, what type of paint can we use for the foot/hand prints? It needs to be washable and safe around the kids AND be able to stick to the rustoleum paint. I would like to spray a clear coat over it if possible. Any ideas?

I would use a straight enamel paint that is water washable . Let it set up then use poly to clear coat it with first coats just mist on so it builds to cover the enamel paint then a couple heavy coats .

Ditto....any water based enamel should work. As long as you give it plenty of time to dry, a clear coat with a water based paint will not ruin anything. IIRC, water on top of oil based, but not oil on top of water based.

BTW....Kudos to you for being involved in your kids school......

Getting a little off topic...but....the real reason that kids going to private school do better is not because of the school....but because of the parents who send them their.....it's because they care OR because "I'm paying big bucks for your school, so you had better do well!"

If more parents were like you, we would be pushing better kids into the world.

I am in full agreement that parent involvement is by far the best way to insure a child is doing what needs to be done to succeed. Far too many parents use school as a day care, not for education.

Not sure how applicable it is, but when I painted my race bike I had my best friend's daughter provide some help. I painted the whole bike and cleared everything but the tank. She provided hand prints and some drawing (she's 3) using some waterbased, kid friendly paint. I think it was made by Crayola. I let it dry for a couple days. Then dusted it with a few light coats of clear to seal it in. Then I laid down a few heavy coats on top. Seems to have worked good since it's still there.
