Well new to the site and have a golf cart I painted with a spray gun rustoleum gloss black ..wondering if I could get some info on repainting it again gloss black and wanted to find more info about how to prep and mixing ratio ...last paint job came out good but this time going for more gloss ..keep in mind its a golf cart and wanted a shine better than last paint job ..can I just sand and repaint without going to crazy with prep work being a gloss blk paint is already there??? and whats a good mixing ratio...my last paint mixing was acetone and gloss blk just so my mixing stick dripped for 3 seconds then stopped ..my guess of what ratio that was ..any good info would be appreciated thanks in advance..can anyone tell me the correct spray mixture I should use paint to MS please..and will just taking the shine off the existing paint be ok for prep work???

Yes, just scuff the shine off. The thicker the paint is the more gloss it will get. Spray a couple light coats on to get the color, first a breeze coat, then a coat to color everything you missed in the breeze and when its just still tacky a wetter top coat which makes it shine. You can add some generic gloss hardener also.

enamel hardener. Temp has a little to do with it but usually start around 10% or so, sometimes it takes a little trial, just enough to get it to go thru the gun. There are those might say it don't but letting it sit a few mins after mix seems to make it work better, it might just seem that way. Rusto is kind of funny, likes the thinner or reducer made for it.
Another thing, equipment is hard to paint especially when its cold. I have had it all beautiful and come back half an hour and find runs,, ha.

As a note, these enamels are slow, you can go to dinner and come back for recoat. Don't paint them when you are in a hurry, even longer when colder.

I mixed mine 60/40 rustoleum/mineral spirits when I sprayed my trailer. It was a little thick, but levelled out in the 30 mins to an hour it took between coats. Keeping bugs out of it was the hard part.
ok 60/40 sounds like what I should go with being I dont have any other replies to compare with ..the first time like I said was 3 to 5 drips before it stopped dripping what ever that mixture could of been lol.. and didnt get the shine I think I could of got from what research I read..so to sum it up remove old gloss ..wipe down with mineral spirits..mix 60 restoleum and 40 MS ..adj gun to 40psi ..paint then recoat after 1 hour to get a gloss shine correct???

I used black Rustoleum on a off-road truck custom tailgate & I brushed it on with no thinning.
Great gloss & laid out pretty flat (except for the brush-marks)
I re-did the tailgate a year later & then sprayed it with the same rustoleum & it didn't have much gloss, but laid out flat. Never did figure out why it didn't have the same gloss.
I would avoid using acetone to thin it though. It may lift / wrinkle the finish under what you are spraying.
For prep on your application, I would wet sand it with 400 grit wet sand paper & then spray it. Sanding it will give it a smoother finish when you are done & it will make the paint stick better.

Forget the Rustoleum. Wet sand with 600 grit wet or dry 3M paper, then go to the local automotive paint store, get a can of good DuPont or PPG single stage, get some proper thinner, and get some hardener. Pick up a couple mixing cups so you can mix the proper ratio. And with single stage and hardener, you can cut and polish just like base/clear, other than you have to wait a little longer. That is if you want to cut and buff as it's not needed.

I've had good luck using laquer thinner instead of mineral spirits when spraying cheap enamel.
I've found that a can of paint that's been stored partly full for some time may not produce as good of gloss as a fresh can.
If you add hardener, be sure you know what safety precautions you should follow as far as ventilation and what respirators are required. Some kinds can be can be pretty toxic.

I think I used 75/25 when I sprayed Rustoleum on my workbench. Its really a trial and error, and also depends on the spray nozzle size you are using. Larger nozzle doesn't need thinned as much.

And if you go this route make sure you have a very good full face respirator and cover all exposed skin as urethanes are deadly and some people can have extreme reactions to them even the first time they are exposed to them.
