Hey Folks

I started my restoration project today and have taken it apart and pressure washed it. I have a few questions for you knowledgeable folks please.

1. The rubbers are intact but are filthy and covered in years of dirt what's the best way to clean restore them.

2. There is so many years of paint etc I have decided it would take to long for me to strip it back so should I get it dipped, or bead blasted.

3. The wheel rubbers are pretty grubby any suggestions on how to clean / restore them.

For the rubber parts I'd try a tire cleaner product and a scrub brush. Any auto parts store sells a number of different brands and types.


As for the paint, until the pictures show up it's hard to say but I'd still look at using paint stripper. You can do it at home; it will take time and effort but will cost less than paying someone to blast or dip the parts. Another option is a heat gun and a putty knife - they're normally meant for stripping paint off wood but it should work on metal as well.

I don't remember having too much difficulty removing the grime off of the rubber. I used simple green. A similar project:

I’d sandblast that including the center of the wheels.

The rubber should clean up fine with an ordinary degreaser and a brush. Rinse well, dry and treat with an automotive tire dressing. If the rubber is damaged due to UV it’s already happened, nothing you can do about it now. Cleaning & dressing will make them look as good as possible.
