while you are waiting for the experts to chime in I might have a solution. even though I haven't bought diesel for quite a while (40 years maybe) or done this to a vise, I have smelled it when I was younger and it isn't something you want to breath. ever follow a diesel burning car or truck and have your vents or windows open?

do you have a deck at your condo or a small backyard? at this point there are not too many thieves looking for broken vises so you might be safe even leaving at a friend's house. can you borrow a plastic 5 gallon bucket with a lid on it or go to Costco or Target and buy a storage box with a lid? do that and buy maybe 3 gallons of diesel and set your Wilton in it for a day or two depending on the temperature. Snowing in Colorado might take longer or somebody else with that knowledge might help. with the lid on the 5 gallon bucket or a storage box with a lid you might be able to set it in the corner of the garage, but bear in mind it "is" flammable.

best of luck and I think you'll have plenty of things to read on the Wilton to help you get through the restore.

About the only possibility I can think of would be to leave it outside at my parents house. They are close by and have a full size house with all the amenities commonly associated with one. As for Colorado weather, we aren't forecasted to be above 50° F anytime soon. I've never experienced the smell of standing diesel fuel and I only assumed the smoke coming off a diesel truck was the after fact of the engine igniting the fuel.

Thanks for your input, you've given me another idea or two for where to attempt this.

Remember two important things. use a container that can hold diesel for an extended amount of time and it is flammable so try not to set it where it will do any damage to more than the container and your vise if it does happen to catch fire somehow if it's left unattended.

Seiler, the best bet is to use your parents place. The smell of diesel isn't too bad, but it does have a petro smell to it. A 5 gallon bucket with 3 gallons of diesel would be fine.

That old vise is pretty rusty, so it might need to soak for a few days. Get a 5 gallon bucket & a lid from your local home improvement store, drill a couple of holes in the lid for vents, drop the vise in the bucket. Fill it with diesel & put the lid on it. Let it soak for a few days & check on it.

It should clean up like new!

Alrighty. Thank you two for the feedback, I greatly appreciate it. I'll post up results after I have given it a try!

I purchased this device a Wilton 9400 in excellent condition before restoration about two years ago along with a 6 inch grinder for $10 on Facebook marketplace. I have restored this virus inside and out top to bottom front to back. It is an absolutely perfect condition. I love it.

Hopefully it is contagious and I will get one too
