Restoring My Vintage Matco Toolbox

Hey everybody I'm new here. So I've recently acquired a very nice Matco toolbox from a relatives auction. It is a two piece set, the one I'm questioning for now is in the picture. I want to get it sand blasted and powdercoated as close to the original reddish-orange as possible. My question I have is how much does this process cost? Can they match the original color and how long would it take (given once I bring it in they start to work on it.) Any information provided is greatly appreciated!6b49c0fee7747409b1d4cab4e55b0eab.jpg

Wow, good catch on a box.:thumbup: There is a member on GJ named CudaChick that runs a powder coating business that I bet could help you.

Cuda chick or me could lead you in the right direction. We both do powder coating she is the best out of the two of us on custom work. For a tool box either one of us.

Three things.

1.) Price wise it can be a very regional thing.
2.) Make sure you work with a shop that has experience in coating sheet metal products. You wouldn't think, but BTDT.
3.) I'd suggest you consider an automotive style paint job as well.

Wow, no wonder my ears were burning tonight. :D Firstly, thank you for the mentions gentlemen! Your confidence is fabulous and appreciated more than you know.

You didn't mention which part of the country you're in stumbofarms but that will most likely play a role in your cost. I can't speak for the other guys who do it but I charge $30 an hour across the board; conversely, other shop rates I've seen range all the way up to $250 an hour. Check references and ask to see actual work samples before hiring anyone local; lots of people these days buy a hobby kit, open their own shop two weeks later and practice on other people's parts. I hate to see anyone become a victim.

For something like your medium Matco box up there, you're looking at:

a) complete disassembly including removal of the slide mechanisms, lock and emblems;
b) blasting / stripping existing paint;
c) any necessary bodywork, straightening bent drawers, etc. It looks like you've got some rust there especially along the bottom; absent closer inspection, note that it may need some metal filler depending on whether it advanced to pitting.
d) washing, drying and pretreatment of the metal (phosphate coating / corrosion inhibitor); and
e) powder coating.

Depending on what you have in mind for the drawer pulls and emblems, I could restore and polish what you've got (I have a 1 3/4 hp commercial buffer), recreate the finish with powder, or do them in an entirely different color. I don't know offhand if the MATCO logos on each are cast into the handles or decals but that same (or a different) look could be done on them.

The MATCO orange can most likely be easily matched. My supplier has over 6,500 powder colors available including textures and special effects. I can also mail you some swatches to look at and compare with the box in advance (the inside edge of a drawer would probably be the most accurate/true), but keep in mind those are merely the tip of the iceberg.

If you elect to send it somewhere outside of your area, shipping costs will also be a consideration.

Without some closer pictures, measurements, and seeing the drawer mount layout and MATCO emblems, I can't do much on a formal estimate here but $400-$500 is probably a fair bet for a complete restoration with polishing. Recreating any polished areas with a single powder would of course be cheaper but a two-tone custom job would run it back up some. Other opinions may vary, but so do other shops ... most just blast and coat what you present, they don't fix anything first.

If you have other questions or want to brainstorm on details or color schemes, give me a call! It looks like a fine score and I wish you every success on filling it up. :D

I have the middle MB503 that probably went with this box. It is a really nice unit. I think I paid $40 off Craigslist some years ago for it with a side shelf included in the deal.

I appreciate the information about the coating! I will say, I didn't think it would cost THAT much so that opened my eyes up.

BY THE WAY I live on the West Central border between MN and ND near Fargo, ND. I know there are plenty of professional businesses that do this kind of stuff there.

Recently I contacted a gentlemen with an ad about blasting/coating in our local newspaper. Said he had 28 years experience and had done toolboxes. Still waiting on his quote of my box.

Shipping my box somewhere isn't an option I like solely because of extra cost. Thanks a bunch!

Here's are some new pictures just taken. Here are the drawer pulls or handles, whichever way you call it.

They each are bolted to the inside of the drawer with two very small bolts.
I washed them, then scrubbed them with the Rubbing Compound and this Mag and Aluminum Polish. Then dried and finished them with another light bath and dried them to perfection.859d8e03623b6faa0e1aeebfa54734ea.jpg

If you're going whole hog and restoring you can fill the black area around the lettering with some thin black paint(I used some Testors model paint) on a fine artist/hobby brush. The thin paint will fill all the recesses around the lettering. It takes a tiny amount of paint on the bush.

I did that with a couple of Snap on badges that were pretty beat and they look good. I will snap a pic when I get home.

I have a similar top & bottom box, top is Mac and bottom is Matco, and from what I understand they were both built in the same factory in the 70s.
The top I left alone because the old custom paint job is awesome.
The bottom I used a paint removing grinding wheel-it had several coats of black latex paint-down to bare metal, sanded with some 220 grit wet/dry paper, then primed and painted with the Krylon professional primer and safety red paint.

Nice! I like that old school paint work on the top box. Your bottom box looks extremely similar to mine except my lock is still in its place.

I just picked up a similar top/bottom box in pretty good shape but it needs some TLC on the outside. Does anyone know a rattle can paint that matches the orange-ish color as OPs box?

Pic of model and color attached.
Thanks
