Jim Why aren't you concerned about the oil on your plane transferring to your wood?

Good question. Oil is not good for a woodworking bench or for any woodworking project. I should have elaborated more.

After an overnight soak in 3 in 1, I wipe the parts well with a cotton rag to remove excess oil. I twist a point on a paper towel and dab out the oil from blind screw holes. Sometimes the sole needs to be polished and that removes any residual oil. When everything is clean I can reassemble the plane. The final step is to wax the plane (but not the sole).
