So a friend of mine gave me this vise. If I carried it down from their attic, no problem. So here she is in all her glory. I have it mostly stripped down and started cleaning the pieces. Holy cow this vise has a lot of parts to it.

I figured I'd start a thread so I dont fill up others asking questions or seeking input.

Well that's why I made a thread haha because the only answers i have are the size and that it is made by odin a company in Chicago. Once the base is out of electrolysis I'll take pics of the markings.

JMHO, but don't paint that beauty. Someone once told me, "Lipstick on a pig doesn't make the bacon taste any better." Just wipe it down with oil and put it to work.

With the way the parts are coming out of my tank I'm sold on no paint. Other than too much can I screw up rubbing BLO them? Just a light coat on them right?

That thing is way cool. It looks very useful. I have nothing else to add other than I’ve only seen them online, and I think everyone is jealous because it’s awfully quiet around here.

RED: i've watched several members put on BLO and put their vises in a smoker to bake on the BLO. i've also heard that the smell is not very nice so might be best to do it outside. definitely don't do it in an oven that you cook food to eat out of. that said the smoker cooked BLO vises did have a nice shine to them.

cool looking vise and not sure I've ever seen one like it, but the name sounds oddly familiar to me.

I didn't bake my vice, but did some other things. Baking darkens it, and smells worse for less time. Also apparently there are heavy metals in commercial BLO, you can get organic pure linseed oil at the healthy food store as 'flax seed oil'. That smells just as nasty, but is among the best for a frying pan, and looks about the same.

Higher temps, more coats, & longer time get more dark.

Well no real updates on the vice. While the parts are cleaning in the tank I decided to make a new welding bench. When we moved I threw the old base away. Now that the new shops all set up time to build a proper welding table so I started working on that a little so it can be ready to mount the vise

Red: great looking shop!! is your ODIN going to be a daily user or just a speciality vise for those odd jobs that needs it?

I have another vise. I think I'm going to use my cheap vise for the messy stuff mig stick welding and grinding and then use the odin as more of a tig positioner. Keeping sparks and splatter away from it

Oh and thank you the shop came out really nice. I did a shop build thread. I worked really hard and even though it's small I'm quite proud of it. Not bad for a dorky guy in his 20s haha

RED: you might want to start a shop/garage thread in garage gallery to show off some of your shop and skills. it's not always about the building or shop cause the threads that get the most views are the ones with the interesting guys and their projects.

those are some serious leveling screws for your table. keep up the great work and maybe somebody will know or you will find out more about your vise that sorta looks like it's a Gatling machine gun.

RED: looks great. since you are a fairly new member if you go in your GJ personal files and cut and paste the link into your sig line so it shows up on your posts you might get more visitors. i'm on about 4,000 threads and even though some are old and need to be deleted there are 1,000's of threads to read. with skills like you have and cool tools I wouldn't call you nerdy i think I'd lean toward a young man with goals and a good head on his shoulders.

cheers

Red: since you are in your 20's and I didn't join here until I was 57 don't count yourself short if you want to have some fun here. about 1/3 of those threads are vise related answers. another 1/3 were welcoming new members cause I took it upon myself to try and make this a better forum for us all and help the NEW GUYS & GALS.

and the rest are me learning or helping other members when I can.

don't you think your ODIN looks like a machine gun that should be sitting on top of an old WWII Jeep?

cheers

I appreciate the kind words and haha you arent the first to say that. I'm excited to see what ot looks like on the table mounted and ready for use. Maybe I should mount it on a tripod instead of the table to complete the Gatlin gun look

RED: great looking welding table and an even better looking vise!! WELL DONE!!:bowdown:

I think that is a lot better home for it than a tripod stand that probably would not have a permanent spot in your shop.

Cool old vise!

Yes, guys have done that. I have not. But DON’T use your kitchen oven. (Smell)
Unless you have lots of room and can score an old electric range for the corner of your shop, get an electric smoker and do it outside.

That turned out insanely awesome bud, great job!! Next to royce's hand made monster you come in a solid second for the baddest vise I've ever seen.

The table turned out fantastic as well. I'd like to offer one suggestion, the threaded studs are really long and being as such are going to be prone to bending right at the jam nut. Personally I'd get some rod couplers and cover as much of the thread as reasonable. It doesn't have to be 100% by any means but it would really help strengthen the assembly and protect the threads from damage.

For a guy that hasn't made it to 30 yet you have impressive abilities and probably the most important attribute - patient. Good show brother, keep it up and you'll go far in life.

Just a thought here... will the flanges on the fixed jaw allow it to mount directly to the base without all the swivels? If so then give some thought as to how you mount the base to the table so that you can do so if you want to use it without all the swivels and flex in each one.
