Retaining Ring Captured Inside a Collar

I have a Jacobs 633C Drill Chuck that I'm goofing around with. It uses a collar along with a 33 Jacobs Taper to attach to a Powermatic 1150 Variable Speed Drill Press.

The collar threads onto the drill press's spindle. A retaining ring, captured inside the collar, engages a groove in the shaft of the chuck.

Yesterday I removed the chuck and, using a snap ring pliers to deal with the retaining ring, separated the collar from the chuck itself.

Now I am trying to reassemble the collar and the chuck...
