I like forged, one piece snap ring pliers as I hate the interchangable tip style, but that's just me. The stamped sheet metal style tend to flex more too.

Knipex and snap on are the two I'd look at but I don't know your budget.

I have Proto and OTC ones one piece and they work fine.
You just need 3 or 4 sizes depending on the snap ring. Also you need two for each size for different type snap rings.

There are some nice forged pliers from Facom and Knipex with tips made of piano wire. Both claim they last much longer than regular forged tips.

I have the Channellock ones that switch from an internal snap ring to an external snap ring with the flip of a switch. No more having two pliers!

I usually don't say this, but price is not that important to me, just quality and reliability. I use them often and don't mind spending some $$ for them, but don't want to mortgage the house either.

Check ebay for Snapon SRPC112. You should be able to get that set for a little under $200. Excellent quality and reliability and also covers most sizes you are likely to encounter.

Who makes the Snap on ones? I have the Mac set, another guy at the shop and I were comparing them. I cant really tell a difference. By the way they are awesome.

If memory serves me Stride tool makes alot of the truck brand snap ring pliers along with Craftsman, This was covered in a previous thread and after some research it was pointless to buy from snap on or mac, The same pliers could be had much cheaper by other companies.

The ones resold by everyone are made by Stride. They are sold through Mac/Snappy/Proto/OTC/Craftsman to name a few. The Mac ones cost me $300 a few years ago (the 12pc quarter-turns). My apprentice just got them for $100.00 through Craftsman USA. He actually bought them to replace the 12pc forged Snap-on set, which he thought were too bulky and had the handles set apart too wide.

I'm actually planning on buying both 4pc sets of the newest Knipex ones with the wire tips.

Edit: And I posted that last line before Moose's message was up. Weird

IIRC, I fished mine (new) out of the 'bay a few years ago for much less - like $80 or so. Been pleased with them, although I don't use them on a daily basis.
