I don't post much here. I just lurk.

I know I am 15 years away from my retirement goal, but I love to pipe dream and start collecting the information/plans etc.

Our goal is to travel a lot and have a place to stop over ocassionally to wash clothes, check the mail, eat Christmas dinner etc. We have a vintage travel trailer that we are restoring/modifying to our liking and eventually would like to pull it with our 57 Ford wagon.

In Oklahoma your taxes are based on liveable square footage. You can lock your taxes at the current rate when you are 65. Our goal is to build the most efficent house we can, with the most modern materials, keep our taxes down, and allow us to live within our means.

Here is the floorplan that fits these needs best. Now keep in mind we are going to modify it to our liking, but this is a rough draft. We plan on 2x6 walls with the most R value insulation available, radiant floor heating, tankless hot water heaters, passive solar etc.

Post up your dream house/shop/apt.

I like that you have designed most of it as house appearance, but in reality it is mostly garage and workshop. Nice creativity.

I tell people my retirement dream house is 3000 sq ft garage and 1500 sq ft house. I have thought about a place with first floor being big garage, and the second floor being living quarters. Would have to get an elevator though, hauling big stuff up and down stairs will need help in older age.

I didn't design it. I just found it. I am modifying this plan to have a bigger shop and approx double the living space. I want everything heated and cooled, and cable, phone lines, etc. all under one roof. The living space will work out to about 1,000 sf I predict.

No 2nd story in a retirement home.
As much as we don't want to think about it, our bodies go to hell as we age. One way or another our ability to go up and down stairs is one of the first to go as our knees and hips deteriorate.

At 43 years of age we bought a multi-level house from a retired couple who were moving into a single story home. By the time we got moved in we realized part of the reason they moved.
And now, after battling a severely broken leg/knee for the last 13 months, I'm realizing that this may not be our retirement home, at least not in it's current configuration.

Just fit a stair-lift. Cheaper than moving home.

This is a single story, the second story is open for the motorhome/trailer. Look closely at the rendering.

My idea of a perfect retirement home is a 6 car, 1 bedroom garage with child-proof door locks.

As it is now...
