Looks pretty inventive. The only downfall I see is lighting. Looks like you would need a very well lit shop to be able to see very well.

That is neat!

I was thinking about getting one of those cheap plastic hooped carports and putting clear plastic over and under it and temporarity setting it up in one bay of my shop for stuff like this.

Or you could rent one of them wedding tents for the weekend to paint your car.:lol_hitti

Its a $99 10x20 shelter I got from the farm store (made in China of course) It has 8 legs, others I have seen only have 6. I used heavy 6 mil clear plastic to wrap the sides, and used 1x2 furring strips to staple the roof plastic to the side plastic. On the open end I have OSB barn doors which are framed in with 2x4s. I use a large floor dryer to push air through a 3M furnace filter, creating a positive pressure on the paint booth when in use. Its works well, maybe not as good as a real on, but a heck of a lot cheaper.

Something like this ?

The wall piece which is on the left is the door to close the booth.

Not trying to start a fight but is using a house box fan to provide positive pressure in a painting enviroment as much of a danger as using a house box fan as an exhaust fan?

When I did mine - and most of the home brew paint booths - I used fans for pressure, not exhaust. I have a small multi-speed squirrel cage fan for that now. Build your booth (I used 1x2s and plastic drop cloths) and pressure it with air. Use furnace filters on the air intake and a rack of furnace filters for the exhaust - enough to make sure there's no restriction. With an HVLP gun, you're at as minimal an impact as you might want.

When I sprayed my car, I used a conventional gun. The "booth" was about a 14' wide plastic tunnel in the old shop with a box fan in both end windows. 20x20 filters were taped over those fans and they were set to blow in. I didn't use exit filters. The overspray went out of the 24' booth, through the 22' shed, around both buildings and back onto the fan filters in the back of the building. And - got out of just about every taped joint and into about everything. I switched to HVLP right after that.

With the retractable units, what happens when the filters get clogged? Does the exhaust fan **** the thing closed like an accordian?

That's correct, I use the fans to pressurize the booth. On the other end I have an exit with only 1 filter. I did run all 3 fans for 2 hours prior to start spraying to get the air clean. Then I switched off 2 of the fans. One fan is enough to keep the pressurized to keep the dust out. This fan I left on for another 2 hours after finish spraying.
