Retrofitting drip edge, do I need to trim the shingles back?

Hi all, I'm in the midst of reno-ing my workshop and am about to embark on installing soffit, fascia covers, and gutters. The roof does not have an existing drip edge which I would like to install so that the fascia cover has something to slide under.

Here's a pic of a test piece of drip edge I've slid under the shingles. There is roughly a 3/4" overhang from the end of the drip edge to the end of the shingles.

In my research, I've heard it said that a 1/4" overhang is recommended. But for an existing roof, is it necessary to trim it back? I'm already loathe to tinker with the roof so the less I disturb, the better.

If it matters, I'm going to cut off the gable end so that it's flush and will be hanging 5" gutters. Thanks for reading!

My shingles overhang the drip edge by at least an inch. The shingles and drip edge should shed water into the gutter.

Fascia cover? I'd skip it... prime and paint the fascia boards. The condensation from wrapping them in sheetmetal will rot them out fast.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It seems a no-brainer after I posted the question, but hey better a stupid question asked than a problem created by my own stupidity?

I've had 2 houses w/ aluminum wrapped trim boards. One we lived in for 26 years, the other was 20 yrs old when we moved away. I did some repairs on both that I needed to get under the aluminum wrap and there was no problem w/ the wood on either house.

Why not just replace the roof seeing as it has quite a bit of moss/growth on it already! You need shingles more than soffit, facia, and drip edge.

If you are adding gutters you may want to consider using gutter apron vs drip edge. I’d only trim the shingles back for ease of cleaning gutters if needed, chalk a line and cut them on a nice warm day.

slide the apron under the shingles and face nail with aluminum or stainless trim nails.
