Returning a gift to Sears for credit

Anyone have any experience with this?

My dad got me a 200 piece Mechanic's Tool set. Problem is , I really do not need a 3rd or 4th set of craftsman 1/4 inch ratchets or even 3/8's ratchets like the ones in the set.

I don't want to upset him asking for a receipt, but I know he didnt get any sale or break on this. Currently it's $199 on the Sears website and I saw one online that is online shipping only that is FAR more useful with loads of 6 pt wrenches, impact sockets, and all sizes of sockets deep and regular as well as socket drvers, two screwdrivers etc--It's on sale so I wanna buy it!

OK dilemma is, if I bring the 200 piece set in for the store issued credit card with the balance, canI use that to make an online purchase?

Secondly, will Sears give me a hard time or try to give me a much reduced "sales price" or the actual value of the set?

The set is unopened and the nylon lock strap isnt cut off etc.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

CISO

I'm not sure how store credit works these days, but I believe, without a receipt, that you'll get a credit for the lowest price in the last 30 days.

I was afraid of that. Thanks. Just don't feel like parting it out, I wouldnt get the money out of it that way either. Man what a PITA :D

I just dont want to ruin the spirit of the gift but it's kinda like getting a Brooks brother's suit but in the wrong size--it's nice, but I will never use it.

OK have some thinking to do.

Thanks

+1 generally no receipt, and you get store credit at the lowest sales price over some time period, but I think its actually longer than 30 days, maybe even 6 months.

OTOH I just read my latest receipt and it says no refunds without one.

Always the best thing to do is go to your old man and tell him your oversupply position and what you really would like is-xxxxxxxx, and offer to pay the difference for a step up--he would appreciate this rather than see the tools unused

See I'd do an exchange for this other set if I could get it delivered to the store.

I know what I am doing is a lot of work to basically only be out of pocket about $50, but in the end it will plug a few gaps and will have backups of some much used wrenches as well as just being more useful overall.

I need to think more on this. I'm pragmatic when it comes to stuff like this. I know he really wanted to get me a "decent set" --ie it meant a lot to him. So a lot to be said for not taking the wind out of his sails.

I may need to go te flea bay "part out" route. Not sure.

(NB I already have some pieces from his old tool sets that have sentimental value and they arent going anywhere. Anything from my dad means a lot to me--it's just this is a new set and complete redundancy to what I have. It was a surprise and I love him for it, but it's currently not going to be used.)

they will screw you
tell dad thanks so much but can I have the recipt please because they have a bigger set that has some really cool stuff in it you want for about the same money so you would like to swap it
and then later tell him how much you use and love the tools he got for you on that deal.....

I think it is even worse than that. I went to return a set of the Craftsman branded ratcheting wrenches last year, and they only wanted to give me $10 for a set that was on the shelf on sale for $40.
