Reusing old styrofoam insulation

We are getting our house resided and are removing the old aluminum siding. There is a layer of perhaps 1/2” styrofoam insulation that comes down with the old siding.

I will be blowing insulation in my garage ceiling later this year.

Is there anything wrong with breaking down the old styrofoam and putting it in my garage ceiling? Is it any sort of fire hazard? This would mostly be done to reuse the old stuff and get it out of the way rather than putting it I the garbage can over the next month.

And when I say styrofoam, I mean that’s what it seems to be to me.

Jim

I think the outsides are treated with a retarder so breaking it up kind of defeats that. That said I personally wouldn't feel uncomfortable mixing it in with blown.

This was the old "drop in" insulation that was really only good for backing up the aluminum and minimizing or preventing some dents.
Junk it.

there may be a styrofoam recycler near you. It goes in a big machine and the squish it into a huge block. Then it is used for certain new things.

I gave all my odd scraps of styrofoam to a contractor friend who put it in his garage attic before he blew in the cellulose insulation. It will save a small volume of blown in insulation and won't hurt a bit.

A little late as this is from last year, by it could be used as barriers to keep the blown in insulation from covering up the vented soffit if you have them.

Mix it with gasoline, pour the combination into a wine bottle with about 1" of dirt and stones, put a wick in the top and storm the Bastille.
