reversable Gearmotor?

I have a need to have this Gear motor reversible. Connected as is and line voltage on the yellow and black, it runs fine CW.


I have what seems like a good candidate Gear motor, an old Dayton with 4 wires and 2.8 RPM output. Why 4 wire unless its' reversible?

It runs fine with CW rotation using the yellow and black at line voltage and red and blue tied together. Google was not my friend for trying to look this up as the "normal" flip black and red wires does not get me reverse, just a bad sounding groan...


Hopefully someone on GJ knows the proper reversing hookup... (I don't want to continue to play games and burn the thing up..)

Looks like a universal motor. With 4 wires the field and the armature are independently wired. The field should be wired in series with the armature. To reverse directions you change the polarity of either the field or the armature. This can be easily done with a DPDT switch. If you use a DPDT switch with a center off, you have a single switch for direction and power.

The wiring is almost identical to a reversible electric drill.

Greatbear, I understand how a DPDT switch works, what I'm stuck on is if the current wiring gives me CW rotation with line voltage to the yellow and black, what setup will make it go CCW?

the combinations I've tried just bet a nasty buzz...

(I'm thinking the current wiring may not be right even though it works in one direction...)

I just tried tying the yellow & black together, and applying line voltage to the separated blue/red, still CW rotation...

Something else is goofy here, we just timed the RPM output and as wired, it's more like 10 RPM, not 2.8... :dunno:

There is also a distinct "click/chunk" once a rev... so I'll be opening it up for that at some point...

OK, I found this diagram and got it going.

Red/blue tied together and line on the other two, gets CCW,

Yellow blue tied together and line on the other two, gets CW,

Thanks Greatbear, your hint of "universal Motor" was what got me on the right track:

Here is my (much simpler) diagram for the Dayton 4 wire motor using a 3 position (center off) DPDT switch; Look right?:

If you look at the data plate it tells you F/L 2.8 rpm N/L 9 rpm . So what your seeing seems correct.

Ah ha! Thanks Larry, I didn't even notice the second RPM rating, and the F/L actually shows up better in the pic than in real life.. :dunno:

Outlaw, your drawing looks perfect. I was not sure which wire colors were assigned to the particular windings, just that swapping the polarity of either one with respect to the other is what reverses the direction, on AC or DC. And, yes, with a universal motor you have wide fluctuations in RPM with respect to loading, if this works within your parameters, you are good to go.
