Hey all

I am finally in the position to build a detached garage. I’ve wanted one since I was 16, and i’m 40 now. Nows the time.

Anyhow, i’d like a 2 post hoist installed and space for another vehicle beside it. I have attached a quick drawing of what I can build according to bylaws. Where should I install the hoist? Let me know what you think!

Can you make it wider? 24' will feel pretty narrow once you start putting stuff in it. I'd do 30' wide if you can swing it financially. That little 8.5' section is only 6" wider than a 2x4 is long.

Maybe I can stretch it to 25’ wide.

My detached garage is 24 x 24 and it is tight with just one car right in the middle when it comes to actually working on something. I would not want a lift installed any closer than 3 ft from the wall. Most lifts are close to 12 ft wide so that wont leave you much room to park another vehicle. Also keep in mind that unless you get an oversize (maybe 18') door its going to be tough.

Get a can of landscape paint and lay it out on the grass where you plan on building it. Then you can see what it will really be like.

Either that or get a piece of graph paper and lay it out and then cut out a couple of cars in scale size and try it out.

Room for workbench, tool chest, cabinets, shelving? The 10x8.5 in the back can do some of that, but not all
I have a large shed so a lot of stuff will be stored in there. All I will have in the garage it a toolbox and a workbench.

What prevents it from going out to 30' at the minimum? Is it a land spacing issue? Could you do 30 x 21 (same square footage, but far more standard to layout)? My garage is 21 x 29ish and I can fit my project car in there, have toolboxes at the front, shelving and work benches around the edges and (if I needed) could still fit my daily driver into the other bay. If the slab wasn't cracked and the ceiling were another 6' taller, I'd have a lift.
