I did a dumb thing. I was replacing the original wire on an old Craftsman drill I found at the local thrift store ($9 with the lunchbox and some original accessories). Simple thing, so I didn't take any pictures of the original connections. Then I got distracted cleaning more sawdust out from around the armature and bearings. An hour later, I go to connect the new cord, and I can't figure out how the switch works. The neutral goes to the wire I connected it to. I know because I did put color-coded twist ties on the wires before disassembling it. The red one denotes that I thought they were both hot, but looking at the switch it doesn't make sense to me. There should be a second hot coming out of the switch. The way I have it in the pic (my current best guess), the power from the cord will bypass the switch, and the drill will run continuously. But I can't think of another way. Any thoughts?
Interesting side note. It seems this 1/4" drill was intended for home use. It included a ground wire, but the ground was separate from the plug meaning you could plug this into a two-prong outlet (no ground). If a three-prong outlet was available, you could plug in the ground wire independently. Pretty ingenious solution for a time when 3-prong outlets were not as common as today.
