Explain to me how a vehicle fueled entirely (at least on the plug in side) by privately owned PV solar, not connected to the grid (at all), has any impact on the local power system (grid)? You're right, I don't get it.

I am not at all discussing lifecycle or environmental impact of EVs. And I agree with you 100% that there is environmental impact. That's not what I am talking about. It's about building a stand alone power system to fuel a vehicle that has no impact (at all) on the local utility. Again, I'm bringing those issues up, but I am not denying that they exist.

If you wish to narrow it down to just fueling the vehicle, and I would think on a site like this you know making a car move is only a fraction of the costs involved in a vehicle, be they "normal" type things, like tires and such.

But with your VERY NARROW look on just making it move, 100% solar would be as you claim. And that is oddly enough the only way it can be looked at to get the result the people that say the EV is the only way to go.

I will choose to look at the entire picture, and really that is how it should be looked at, the world does not work on such a thin view of.....well anything.

Just the way I am but I must look at the big picture, start to finish. If you choose not to look into what it takes all the way around.....well that is up to you, but you can't sell me on it being fantastic with 6yr kids working Cobalt mines to get what you need to make your wonder car run.

Love it!

But, I do think every EV owner should be educated on where the electricity comes from.

Part of being an informed consumer.
Do you know if your petroleum based fuel you bought this week came from destroying forests and polluting ground water with cancerous hazmat via fracking? Or if the oil came from a company that sends out assassins to dismember journalists who say bad things about their monarchy and who funded terrorists to kill over 3,000 Americans on 9/11?

OMG in the news today Hurricane Willie Wonka took out 90% of the windmills on the east coast and the whole USA will have running blackouts for the next 10 years. Forum member Jkeyser14 totally flipped out when he realized the world was not a utopia as he envisioned it. OMG, Gary Larson released a new cartoon that showed a pair of cows standing by the side of the road talking, saying, "We used to have cars full of people who cruised by here all the time gawking at us but ever since EVs, no one comes by anymore."

I do.

All energy production has negatives.

But, it’s really only the EV drivers who want to be sainted for being “Green “ that bug me.

Hell, I’d drive an EV, if one fit my needs.

But I wouldn’t be stupid enough to think I’m saving the planet.

You do realize that not all EV drivers (we've got a few here) are seeking sainthood, right? And that "some" of us realize that EVs require materials that come from the planet earth and the mining of those materials has consequences and environmental impact. No one is saving the planet. What's up for debate is which way destroys the planet faster.

I know EV drivers that could give 2 craps about "green". It's all about having a car that will absolutely eviscerate most of the other vehicles out there in a straight line. People buy EVs for all sorts of reasons. I might buy one because I never want to set foot in a gas station again and I prefer the substantial time savings (over years) of plugging in at home.

I think we should refer to EVs as "multi-fuel" vehicles on GJ. Seems like there would be a lot less drama. Right now where I am, if I'm charging, I'm 57% on fossil fuels (ignoring that I'm generating power at home). Course, I've seen this switch the other way too. Just depends on the weather.

OP - if you're going to ever consider a 2nd EV, you might put in a "standard" level 2 charger instead. They adapt to Tesla just fine, but I don't think Tesla adapts the other way around (not 100% sure about that).

Not accusing anyone of anything.

I just asked if the OP knew where the power came from.

But, in talking to a lot of EV drivers around the Seattle area, they seem to think they’re making a political statement by going electric.

As we are predominantly hydro power here, I like to ask them why they hate whales.

They get really confused.

Then I explain that dams kill salmon runs, and that causes whales to starve.

Their choices have consequences. As do mine.

Only difference is I’m not advocating for oil.

I’m more of a “All of the above” approach to energy.

I’d love a new Taycan (they’re an awesome ride👍) but they won’t tow a 9,000 lbs boat over the mountains.

By all means, everyone should enjoy a new EV, but please curb the “Moral high ground” ****

This right here is where you were accusing people of a moral high ground, even after he said he didn't care. There was  ZERO talk of being "green" before your comment.

I just think he will be happier putting in a larger size conduit and wire now so that he can add an additional charger later. It is unlikely that he will ever need to charge two cars for a long trip the same night but it beats shuffllng cars later. And FWIW there are some new inventions and discoveries coming in EV that could make the systems we have now obsolete, including totally different battery designs that last many years longer. Who knows what the current draw will be when those inventions come online.

No one that I know personally (including myself) has ever been unhappy with installing conduit that is too large. I beat the **** out of friends all the time who are building shops, "run conduit from one side of the slab to the other" - it's cheaper to go under than go around or all the way over. And your conduit can be too small, but it can never be too big.

It's all speculation on EV until you own one.. Or two. And owning a Tesla - the configuration is vastly different from owning a Ford Transit, simply in terms of how much control you have over electrical consumption.
