I have a Reznor UDAP heater hanging in my garage that I'm having issues with and I'm hoping that someone can guide me in the right direction. What happens is if the unit isn't running, I get a slight natural gas odor. When I turn it on and it's heating up the shop, there is no odor at all. But when it cycles off, and stays off for while, there is a slight smell. I have checked all of the connections outside of the unit and I can't find any leaks so I'm assuming it's internal. My first thought is the gas valve but I'm not certain. If it is the valve, is it tough to replace? I've never had one apart before.

Does your gas company service gas appliances? Most do. Give them a call and set up an inspection.

if you shut off the gas at shut off valve at the appliance does the smell go away? If so, its internal, if not, its not the heater itself. Even if this was a DIY install, call a HVAC guy or your gas company for service.
