That doesn't make pinching and welding it up a good/safe/legal repair. I have never witnessed a brand new unit with burners that need to be welded up. Probably should weld up the heat exchanger too while the burners are out. Lol. If I had this issue the unit would be going back to the manufacturer, no ifs, ands, or buts. Pretty simple really. I'm not taking on that liability.

Yes the pinch or crimp was only needed
I welded it so the heat didn't expand the pinch back open

Why so afraid of a little burner mod? Plus the manufacturer didn't have "repaired" burners. Us service techs would just pinch them shut when we had too. Besides, if the manufacturer tells you to do it, they are assuming liability.Well I haven't heard of that, learn something new everyday! Pinching that burner shut isn't going to cause the world to blow up! The only reason the wing on the burner is out there is to cross light the burner. I would see them plugged up with dust frequently and nobody died!
I still wouldn't do it, I'm not afraid of the mod, I'm afraid of the whole **** storm that would go on when something does happen. My job as a service tech was to repair and service equipment, not modify parts. The funny thing is you assume liability once you have modified anything on a piece of equipment. Change a gas valve and it somehow fails and causes severe damage? Don't think you won't be asked what exact valve you put in there. And if it wasn't the OEM version since it's no longer available or on backorder? You're going to pay. I think they are selling a *************, if they can't get a simple burner design right.
