Hey guys,

I purchased a Reznor XL-45-1 heater on Craigslist for my soon to be house. It will be mounted in a 22x30 garage. I would have liked to find something larger than this, but i think it will do. I have a few questions.

1) The aluminum line for the pilot from the control box is broke. Looks like someone tightened the nut for the ferrule too tight and punctured the line. Why is the line aluminum and not copper? Can I replace the line with copper? or should i stick with aluminum.

2) On the back of the unit, just below the fan, there is an electrical box that looks like a light switch or outlet electrical box mounted horizontally. All of the wires are sticking out of this box with no thermostat or switch. Two wires for the motor, three that go into the heater, two for the transformer and one blue line that says thermostat. Ive been searching high and low for a wiring diagram and cant find anything. If i get the wire colors, can someone tell me what wires go where? and how i can wire up a thermostat to place on the wall?

Excuse my ignorance...I am a Ford Master Technician and currently work for Ford Motor Company so cars are my thing...being a first time home buyer, and about to start my garage-mahal project, i know i will have a very steep learning curve (this heater, insulation, wall covering, floor coating etc)

Thank you!

The wires that go from the box to the fan are two black wires.
The wires that go from the box to the transformer are one white and one black
The wires that go from the box to the inside of the heater are red, black and yellow
Te thermostat wire is blue and is connected to the control box which is mounted atop the gas in-line valve.

Got a call from my realtor today that the plumbing in the garage that I figured was for the pool heater is infact a natural gas line SO PUMPED that I don't have to install/have a natural gas line installed!!! Any more insight on the heater? I wanna be ready for when I hang it.

So this is older Reznor NG heater with standing pilot light . . . right?? From Reznor website have you found the detailed diagram of that model??

Any damage to the heat exchanger?? Any cracks or rust?? This is your biggest risk with old heater . . . . carbon monoxide poisoning.

For your your NG supply line to pool heater / garage, you'll want to check on size and distance of that NG supply line. Once you add the demand of the garage heater, there might not be enough flow for both garage heater and pool heater. Likely not to be used that much at same time, but they might starve each other out of NG flow.

Post up some pics of problem parts of the heater.

I was unable to locate a wiring diagram on reznors website for it. Or even on reznorparts.com. And yes it has a standing pilot light.

I took the side covers and the back cover off and inspected the heat exchanger and the burners very closely for any cracks or rust. It all appears clean inside like it wasn't used much

The line in the garage I figured was an underground line for the pool, maybe for a heater or filter, but it is a devoted natural gas line for the garage. (The pool doesn't have a heater. And will be gone as soon as I close on this place). From the walk through of the garage without much attention paid to the line, it appeared to be 3/4" npt black pipe and probably runs 30 feet from the house to the garage.

I will upload pics soon. I'm on my phone right now so it would probably be easier to upload from my computer.

I just purchased one of these, any chance you can post a picture of yours? I'd like to make sure I'm not missing anything. Thanks!

This message is for another member that PM'd me:

The blue wire in the picture goes to the red wire off most thermostats and the
black wire goes to the white wire off the thermostat. You have to have power traveling through the transformer, down into the gas solenoid so it allows flow.
Also, the black knob needs to be pushed down and turned towards the front of the unit to bleed air and gas through the system if the pilot light is out.

I just bought one of these unit heaters secondhand. It has electronic spark ignition, not a standing pilot, so the wiring might not match 100%. But this is how mine is wired (and it works). 40 years old and indestructible 👍

The thermostat connects to terminals on my heater's pilot control box.

Apparently there is a way to put a power vent on these units, however one of the necessary parts is out of production...

I have sold Reznor for many years. There are many 40 year old units still going and they get used here. They can't come close to competing with chicom stuff from big box stores though.

Shouldn't really need a diagram there are not many wires. I wish we could still buy standing pilot reznors.

What uses more energy an 80 percent furnace that lasts 50 years or a 90 that you have to make a whole new one when the warranty is done.

Aluminum tubing is used for pilot lines because the hydrogen sulfide in natural gas will corrode the copper to a fine brown powder that could block the pilot orifice. They sell small rolls of 1/4" aluminum tubing 5' . Probably need 1/4" male and female nut and ferrule. Male fitting stick tubing through fitting just 1/8" mark the tubing back of nut. The end of the fitting snaps off for the compression before fitting get snug hold tubing in while fighting 7/16 end wrench. Same with the pilot side.

Worked for a saint louis contractor running service from 72- 2012 they were installing rez from 72 to if not the late 80's or 90's. Unit, duct and makeup airs. Started and serviced hundreds in warehouses. Wasn't st.louis the head quarters? Wonderful factory service and parts dept.
