Ribbed Valve Seat Cutters??

Anyone know what these old style seat cutters were for - they have ribs on the cutting teeth - I thought maybe for roughing down hard seat materials like stellite.

Any clues??

With that angle it is not for the valve seat but for the valve pocket.
They can be used to open up the valve pocket or bowl area when installing a larger valve

They can also be used for roughing out the install of a new seat then you still need to do the grind for a nice finish for the valve to seal

They have the notches to make them easier to use and so they will not be as likely to grab when using them. Also it's like the double cut die grinder bits so they are less likely to load up with shavings

How many do you have?
Generally they arein a set and not all that useful as a single.
I have a bunch, if you don't want it let me know

Thanks for the feedback - found them in a scrap bin - may not have a complete set but will hang on to them for now in case they come in useful.

The former owner said they belonged to his father but he had no interest in the tools - I pulled hundreds of dollars worth of lathe chucks, steadies, live centres etc out of that bin for free.

Also same guy gave me a big antique drill press and a heavy duty 12" floor grinder and delivered them for free on his crane truck.

Some days are diamonds for sure.

Send some pictures of what you got. Also look for a brand.
You will need the pilots for them to work
