Riddle me this!

New shop well trying to get this place set up.

I want to run 3 lines of 220 off this panel a 2 30 amp breakers and a 50 amp breaker

Is this possible?

What is your intended use? This is not exactly residential.

It ain't "220" it is 208V, better be sure your equipment is rated for it, 230V rated motors should not be run on 208, & 240V rated heating elements will not function as well also.


There IS a difference between 208V & 240V, which is why if someone refers to US voltages as 110 or 220, I cringe.

Is your compressor single or 3 phase? as if its 3phase it will be less amp draw inless your using a huge compressor. our 10hp at work is on a 60 single. when it was a 3ph motor only needed 30 amp braker being 3 phase you might be ok as my buddy runs 1 oven for home poweder coating and 2 60 gallon compressors at the same time. with miss outher tools when outhers are over off a 100amp service

U need to do load calcs to see if u can run all that on this service. Pic is fuzzy/blurry but it looks like the main is 100a! In answer to your earlier question about getting more electrical capacity, u would either have to add another subpanel, depending on the size of the service, or upgrade the panel in the pic as well as the wire feeding it! What size is your main service disconnect?

EDIT: This panel has a 4-wire feed, not a 5-wire along with a bare GEC and neutral and ground busses are tied, which tells me this IS your main service panel. If thats the case, then you may have to change the meter and meter socket and the service drop may have to changed as well depending on your peak load.

Also, like Norcal has said, u need to make sure your equipment is rated for 208v NOT 240v!!

Black, red and blue colors are normally used for 208V.But this does not guarantee that you truly have this voltage. I have seen guys just use whatever color tape they had. You may have 240V 3PH.

If this was a 240v delta with a wild leg, you wouldn't see the single pole breakers on the wild leg. Looks like 120/208v 3ph .

Sparky36000 beat me to it!! If this panel was being fed from a 240v delta 4-wire service, then there would be smoked equipment!! The arrangement of the single pole breakers is the giveaway to this being a 208Y/120v fed panel!!

Call your electrician and explain what you want to run. He'll know exactly what he needs to do.

It is clear you are not nearly experienced enough to do with work yourself, especially considering it is a 3-phase panel in a commercial rental, which means there are other people's lives at stake, not just yours. In fact, it is quite likely that you doing electrical work there would not be legal either.
