Ride on mower build.

Around the mid 1980s, I'd had enough of pushing lawn mowers around so decided to build a small ride on mower. Hunting through the rubbish tips in the area, I found a 24" mower blade cover and seat. I also scavenged half a dozen Briggs and Stratton motors in various states of 'buggered', pulled the reasonably decent bits off them and pieced together one engine. At the tip I also found a couple of wheels, some pulleys, a mate had an old single speed, forward/reverse, gearbox which he donated, the gears were a bit worn so I built them up with rods I bought. I bought another couple of wheels, then sat down with my calculator worked out tyre diameters, gear ratios and approximate speed I wanted, came up with the final drive ratios, selected pulleys from the pile I'd collected, bought some chain and sprockets, welded up a frame, rear axle and clutch and put it all together.

It worked really well after a few mods: I used the fence as a brake for a while before discovering shifting from reverse to forward or forward to reverse worked pretty well and saved my fence from collapsing. initially I had the seat too far back, so when shifting from reverse to forward It'd pull a wheely, me ending up on my back with a mower on top of me. Excellent entertainment for the neighbours, but I only needed this to happen a few times before moving the seat forward a few inches. I had a steering wheel to operate the steering when I first put it together, but quickly removed that and replaced it with a tiller. The original clutch I built engaged when you put your foot on it, but I discovered If in gear and I hopped off, the mower would happily disappear down the street by itself, so converted it to push down for go.

I used this mower for near on 20 years before moving to a place with lawns so small the mower was of no use, so dismantled it and threw it down the rubbish dump. Amazingly, the motor never gave any trouble at all, and was still going well with original points and plug when I dumped it. The gearbox with welded up gears also never gave any trouble. Our little chihuahua, liked to join us in everything we did, mowing the lawn being no exception. so I bought an ammo box, mounted it in front of the tiller and every time I'd roll out the mower, little Tobe would bark at me until I put him in his ammo box.

Here's a couple of pics I took of it not long before dumping it. Tobe had moved on to the big kennel in the sky before then, so his seat was removed.

I...... can't quite tell if you are trolling us or not. I really want to believe that you cut your grass for 20 years on that thing

Well, it was 20 years old in the picture. How do you expect a 20 year old mower to look: Nice shiny paint, clean tyres. I think you may just be trolling for an argument. You got it, bye!

Amazing isn't it, moderators get into me for for sticking it to anyone, but apparently it's OK for Mark-17 to call me a troll. Mark-17 must be moderators pet.

I like the story- its all GJ- you took "junk" and made something- Looks pretty cool- (now I mow about 9 acres/week so no way it would work for me) but I still like the ingenuity- Some GJ members are hard to "read" and harder to understand if they are taking a "shot" at you. Let it go- Fighting/sparring will just get you banned- Your lawn mower is (was) pretty cool little idea- What have you built since then?

I like it, but I bet that was a "firm" ride. I mow about 4 acres on hard clay and run 10psi in my tires or I get killed and it's a 60 zoro with suspension.

Reminds me of when I lost power and welded up a cage for my mower to spin an alternator so I could run my router and laptop off an old inverter. If you've got a good shop and more time than money you can come up with some cool stuff.

Sorry to hear about the pup. Take care.

did you ever get hot sitting on it? from the motor heat. or wouldn't it be a rough ride?

It wasn't made for acres, just suburban backyards. Suburban backyards are really not that bumpy, so suspension would have been a total waste.

What have I built since then? Geez, what haven't I built: A mini bike and around four go carts for the kids using 125 cc Victa engines. A go cart for me with a 100cc twin, two stroke motor and four gears. Two or three stand up, land windsurfers, two or three canoe yachts, wood lathe, tablesaws, belt sanders, a 71 Triumph Cafe racer, a 63 A65, a GS750, a YB 100 bucket racer, a CB750, two mopeds, a Triumph Bonneville, a steel framed bookcase with wood inserts, a picnic table, a couple of billy carts, a couple of power files, 12 recumbents. I'm currently building an XS650. Too many things to remember, I'm an adict! The go cart pictured with the dog was for the kids, it had a full house motor, ported, expansion chamber, twin carbs, shaved head, but kids wouldn't use it, it scared them too much. The rough, dirty one was mine, scary fast, no brakes!

It looks a LOT like the first riding mower my father had way back in the early 70s, and it was probably old then.
