I am STILL building a 8x16 shed. I am just about ready to roof this thing and move in. I am stuck on which ridge vent to go with, both are GAF products. Either the Cobra 3, a plastic cap w/ ridge shingles installed on it, or the Master Flow aluminum ridge vent. I am looking at (2) sections of the Cobra vent at $20, and a box of ridge shingles at $25, for a total of $45. Or (2) sections of the Master Flow at $40, and $13 for mounting goodies, for a total of $53. Pretty close to the same cost. Looking for any real world experience from you guys. Pros/cons on each? Thanks guys.

I wouldn't use the aluminum vent, it'll fade and look like **** in a few years. Alot of people don't install it correctly, either. They'll use galvanized roofing nails and a few years down the road the aluminum is eaten away around the nails. The shingle-over vent will have less exposed fasteners. All the fasteners on the aluminum vent will have to have roof cement added to cover them. More prone to leaks at the nail holes.

I'd stay away from the aluminum, too. I also suggest soffit vents. My shed has a ridge vent, but since there's no other ventilation it doesn't do much. It gets hot in there. I'm looking into cutting in some cheapo vinyl soffit vents or other alternative to allow airflow through the shed & out the ridge...

I've had that AL vent on my shed for several years (granted my shed has some trees around it that shade it) with no issues.. As mentioned, just use the right hardware.

And ridge vents are somewhat pointless if you don't do soffit vents... maybe less so on a shed than a house, but still...

My house has an Owens Corning ridge vent. It was chosen not because of the price, but because snow doesn't infiltrate it and fill the attic when it's blowing hard outside.

Probably not a concern with a shed in VA.

For only 16' of ridge I wouldn't put a ton of thought into it.

I was a professional roofer for 10 years. I too would go with the Owens Corning ridge vent. It's a great product. It also has fabric in it now that will deflect rain and snow. Use 1 1/2" nails for the vent and 1 3/4 nails for the cap nails. Also keep the vent away from the edges at least a couple feet.
