hey guys has anyone used the Ridgid 12volt Impact Driver for mechanical use? i just finished rebuilding my car engine and swinging a ratchet and spanners for days on end and the odd use of my 1/2" Klutch stubby pneumatic impact wrench was tiring so i just wondering if this size impact driver will be sufficient, im not looking for 32mm nut breaking torque just ideally like to remove the 10mm 12mm 14mm various bolts from around the engine

also i have 2 motorcross bikes i will be rebuilding shortly those mostly have 6mm engine bolts with the cylinder head bolts being 12-14mm

thanks for any input :)

Any decent impact driver should do u well... on average the most torque needed is like 65ft/lb.

I use a Milwaukee m12 3/8 for my needs on my sv650 and simple engine bay stuff on cars. No problems $100 or less for kit. Many people here like m12 line. It makes short work of most 10-14mm bolts.

I have the Rigid impact. It was a set that Home Depot had available at Christmas with the 12v drill, 2 batteries and charger with case. I have been very pleased using it on dirt bikes and atvs, granted it is not going to break larger nuts and bolts loose. I will normally break them loose with a straight wrench and then use the impact to remove them. For 10 mm and less sizes or screws it has worked very well. My 70 year old dad was underwhelmed when I brought the set home, he mentioned the other day that he was very impressed with both the drill and impact after using them and seeing them used. I think you will be pleased with it if you use it.

If it's anything like the 12 volt drill I have it will probably do just fine. I'm actually looking for one even though I have the new Ryobi 18 volt impact driver.

yeah i was thinking of buying the Hitachi 14.4v impact driver but the whole reason i went with the 12v size was the light weight, laying under the car undoing 10-15 oil pan 10mm bolts than about another 15 transmission and lower crankcase 12mm bolts is tiring holding up tools so it should be a quick zippppp with the impact driver

i will buy a 14.4v or 18v model soon just thought i would start off with the smaller model to see how i like the convenience plus i wasnt sure about using the bigger impact drivers on the smaller 6-10mm bolts i really dont want to strip the threads

i think i would really like using the 12v impact driver for doing up the lager 12-14mm bolts as i wont be able to strip those i think with only 125nm of torque

i bought the 4.0ah battery too

If you can buy the Ridgid impact kit that usually includes 2 batteries, charger and drill for under 100 that should be a fine deal especially since it comes with the 3yr and LSA (lifetime service agreement). Brushed 12v power is usually adequate for small fasteners but brushless power rivals some 18v brushed power. Milwaukee brushless M12 Fuel is more expensive but they are game changers for power, torque and much more power tool options.

I've got one, it rides around in my powersports box. For the price I've been quite impressed with its performance. Repeating what many above said, it's great on smaller fasteners, and sometimes I'll have to grab a Ratchet to break a bolt loose, but for the cost I couldn't be happier.

thanks for the replies :) im in Australia so here we pay around two and a half times of what u guys in the US pay so the Milwaukee's 12v are around $300 i really liked the videos on youtube of the M12's just couldnt budget for one at the moment so i picked up a good used Ridgid for $115 with the 4.0ah battery and charger

if im not happy with it i'll sell it on ebay and try get the M12

do u know if the brush's are changeable on the Ridgid 12v impact drivers?

starting to look for a bigger impact driver but unsure on which one to pick

bowlofturtle mentioned all i would need is 65ft/lb so i'd assume this one will be ok

https://www.masters.com.au/product/...18v-impact-driver-with-2-0ah-battery-fmc645d2

it has 180N.M of torque or 132ft/lb but that one only has 3 years warranty but Stanley is a well known good budget brand

does this look like a copy of any impact driver for sale in the USA? http://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-power-x-change-cordless-18v-impact-driver-skin_p6290472 it has 150N.M or 110ft/lb

tool showed up this morning i gave it a run on a empty battery with 21mm car lug bolts torqued to 80N.M than 70N.M for the video
im in love with this tool, im doing a transmission on a small front wheel drive car in the next week so it should help whizz off those transmission bolts :3gears:

the Ridgid brand and AEG (Asian market brand) are the same drills but seems they have split the market on the latest products each going there own way

Ridgid has the 5x which i really want with the 3 mode power switch

AEG has a brushless model with only variable trigger no mode power switch

https://aegpowertools.com.au/products/impact-driver/18v-brushless-impact-driver

actually i found a good used model im going to pull the trigger on tonight for $179 ill let u guysknow how it goes when it arrives, its on the other side of my country so should be here later this week or monday next week
