Ridgid 40A Tristand Question

I picked up spiral pipe reamer locally for dirt cheep and the fellow threw in some "scrap" for free. I came hope with a Ridgid 40a Tristand, an un-repairable air compressor (no parts to be had, thanks to corporate greed), and two sledge hammer heads.

What I can't figure out, what is the jack screw on the Tristand used for? Also, are there any general tips for a DIYer threading pipe on a tripod? Can you really bend pipe on it? I recently re-did some gas pipes in my house and used a bench vice and had a heck of a time, so I'm delighted to get better tools.

If it is the screw with a shouldered flange on the working end, it is to brace the stand. You put a piece of pipe from that flange to the ceiling of the building and it braces the stand from moving when you really put a lot of torque on the part in the vise.

From the owner's manual:

4. The stand can be anchored for greater stability. Jackscrew – Cut a length of 1" sch. 40 steel pipe to fit between the jackscrew and a suitable overhead support (such as a structural beam or concrete floor). Firmly tighten the jackscrew to hold the vise in place. As larger loads are placed on the vise, the jackscrew may require further tightening.

I have threaded a ton of pipe, in my day, with a tri-stand and a porta-pony.
