Ridgid cordless hammer drill problems

Last night i went to Home Depot to see what selection they had for cordless hammerdrills. I was impressed with the lifetime warranty Ridgid gives on their batteries, so I bought this one.

When i got home, one of the batteries was defective and would not charge. The box looked beat up, and i saw the shipping/inventory sticker was dated February 2008. Two years and 8 months is a bit long for a power tool to be on the shelf at Home Depot, so i figured maybe the battery sat too long without use.
OK, so i return it this morning, and of course i cant find another of the same model anywhere in the store. So i get what looks to be the replacement item, same price, same extras, slightly less torque, Model # R861150:

This one had terrible runout leading to a wobble on longer bits. This shipping sticker was dated three days ago, so at least it was fresh inventory and the batteries took a charge. Well, back to HD for a third trip. This time i tried the new one out in the car, and finally, no runout, and functioning batteries.
The returns guy couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating, he gave me no problem and no questions whatsoever, just told me to go find another one in the tool dept., or else he would refund me my money.

I guess in China, they don't care about chuck wobble, but those used to American tools will probably notice and complain about chuck run-out. If you have one of these, and there is unacceptable run-out, send it back, if ridgid gets enough returns, maybe they will pressure their chinese supplier to up the quality control.

Finally i have a powerful cordless, that runs mostly true.

Well, i just finished looking around the Ridgid Tool forum http://www.ridgidforum.com/forum/index.phpand gave up after reading about 25 threads with multiple posts, all having to do with chuck run-out / wobble on their cordless drills. (There are 63 entire threads returned in response to doing a keyword search consisting of drill chuck wobble.) The posts go from present back several years, and it seems that they still haven't gotten the problem under control. (And just when I started to think the quality of chinese tools in general was getting better.)

newer dewalt drills have massive runnout problems as well. I have one that wobles like crazy. Older one is true. It's a sign of the times. It ***** for all the younger generation that has no choice but to buy poor quality power tools. I made it a point to get most power tools I would need from Milwaukee and/or Bosch before they went completely overseas.

Joe,
Register for the lifetime warranty, and they will send you a card with your lifetime number. You will need this number to get any warranty service from the service center after the third year.

Good luck finding a service center in your area. The place where I work was the last service center in the entire New Orleans metropolitan area. We got out of it for the same reasons as the other guys. It just doesn't pay. Home Depot sells the stuff, but they won't service it.

I wonder can a Lithium Ion battery go bad if its never been charged and isn't used?

My company is a warranty station for Rigid, and 9 times out of 10 the batteries end up being a charger problem / bad contacts on the charger from slamming the battery onto the charger. they arent very tough tools, and the only reason they sell is because of the lifetime warranty.

Well, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person that problems w/ my X3. I'm on my second drill in a yr. They haven't blown me any **** on the exchanges either. Overall I like the drill but that wobbling w/ long bits is unacceptable.

They do have a Jacobs chuck, and I thought they were among the better ones.
