I have one that I have used for years now. I think it is the 33 gallon one. I clean out cars, vacume the **** off the shop floor, and hook it up to my Media Blast cabnet as an dust sucker. Damn thing is awsome.

We have 2 Ridgids where I work and they have been good vacs. They are used in general cleaning of an assembly area and light machine shop.

I had a pipe burst in the attic crawl space. I swapped the hose on my Ridgid shop vac so it would blow and left it on, moving the hose around once a day, for 6 days straight 24 hours per day. Then I swapped it over to the other side of the attic in another nearly inaccessible crawl space and repeated the exercise. For another 6 days. Dried out the attic. That was 6 or 7 years ago and I'm still using that vac. No complaints here. I'd buy another one just like it.

As I said, I've been happy with the Ridgid I bought a few years ago. I wonder if a lot of these positive reviews of the Ridgid aren't of those vacs that are more than a few years old. I wonder if the newer ones aren't so good. Could be a coincidence with the newer one I bought.

Last night I went to the local HD and bought a 14 gal Ridgid vac. I bought the 14 over the 16 because I figured the 4 casters would roll around better than the one with the 2 larger rear wheels. Plus the metal handle turned me off. It looked like a paint scratch waiting to happen. I used it for the first time today in my garage. Not bad suction but it seemed the "exhaust" was more than the suction. I put on the diffuser that I bought with it thinking it might be needed. It was. The old Shop Vac that I had was much less. I guess if I ever want to blow the dirt out instead of sucking it up Ill have it made ! Does it work OK ? Yup. Would I buy another one. Dont know. I looked in HD, Lowes, Sears, even the local hardware store before I bought this thing. Plus I read all the posts on GJ and other sites before I bought it. Im just too lazy to shop for another one. It works and Ill get used to it.

I hope you haven't opened it yet, if you want to save some money. Take it back, then go back to Home Depot on black friday.

They will be selling the Ridgid 16-Gallon 5-HP Wet/Dry Vac for a scant $19.88. You can buy a few of those for what you paid for that 14 gallon version.
