You guys posting photos of the antique vises has piqued my interest in a heavy duty, preferable old, vise in my shop. I presently have a 4" jaw vise that was purchased at Harbour Freight some years ago. It has served me well but finding a good US Made steel vise seems to be the right thing to do.

There is a Ridgid vise for sale on Craigs List at a location close to a family member in a neighboring state. The guy is asking $75 for it, but I have to say it seems like it has had a rough life.

What do you garage dudes think? :headscrat I have a sandblaster and could clean and paint it. What is it worth and is it worth some TLC? :)

No cracks/repairs?
Jaws in decent shape w/some tread left?
That's prolly a low to fair price.... at least down here.

Me, I'd wipe it down w/a splash of kerosene and lots of of rags.... then start using the snot outta it!!

He said he will take $50 so I will ask my brother to pick it up. It may be a while before I get it home but I will let you know.

He sent me another photo via text. It looks like it would clean up pretty good.

TADAAA! Got 'er finished up. It was wire brushed with the 4" side grinder, degreased, the jaw tops cleaned up with the milling machine and painted with Hammered Blue paint. Got $61 in it.
Looks good and works great! Now I want to build a new bench to bolt this nice vise on, which leads to this discussion: http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2931816#post2931816

Hey doghouse I think we need better pics of the camaro in the back ground to really judge how well the vise looks ;). Anyways it looks like you did a great job on the vise.

That is a screaming deal on an awesome vise. I have one like it that my wife gave me for my birthday a few years ago. I once crushed a 3/8ths drill chuck in mine (without a cheater)--vise didn't even grunt. Hope it serves you well.

Wow, that's an incredible 5 day multi-state transformation of a great vise!!

Definitely worthy of a . . . . . . YOU **** !!

Congrats and I'm way jealous of how nice that vise turned out.

Gotta tell us now how far that vise travelled (where to where)?
