EMT is the thin wall pipe you see in most commercial applications. Rigid pipe is more like schedule 40 water pipe. You will use rigid when hanging bay lights or transitioning from underground PVC pipe to above ground EMT.
Rigid has a thicker wall then IMC (Intermediate Metal Conduit) but is permitted in to be used in all locations, (When 1st introduced the NEC did not recognize it's use in hazardous locations). But some PoCo's do not allow it for a mast.
With the price of Rigid right now I'd use IMC if their was a significant price advantage. Other than that I see no reason. I have a supply house who stocks it.
