Rigid pipe threader question

I just picked this up for 7 bucks.
It says it has a 1/2" die head. NPT I believe.
Is that OD or ID ?
I need to buy a head for a 1"OD pipe to add pipe to a a water spigot.
Do the die heads go by ID or OD?
Anyone got a part no. ?


I've never done household plumbing before so I'm not sure about the terminology.

They go by a nominal pipe diameter, that is neither inside nor outside dia. This info might help. It appears that you would need a 3/4" die.

That head is going to thread 1/2" pipe regardless if it is schedule 40 or thicker walled schedule 80. You more than likely need a 3/4" die to do what you want. If you want to make absolutely sure before you spend a decent amount of money on a RIGID die, go to your nearest hardware store in the plumbing department and look at the pipe fittings. NPT stands for National Pipe Thread. By the way, that is a heck of a buy for $20.

When calling out for pipe or threading heads that is the ID. 3/4" sch 40 galvi is just a tad over 1". So you need a 3/4" die.

I'm in Ca.
I just bought a 3/4" head on ebay
35 bucks incl. shipping.

I'm sorry, the purchase price was 7 bucks, I bought it at a local online auction
I had the price mixed up with another purchase.

Some WD4- and elbow grease and it will look much better.
It does work fine as is though. Smooth actuation.

I'm making some extensions for my hose bibs. The house came with 80+ feet of pipe. Who ever built the place had a lot left over.
They must have been short because all the outside hose spigots are about 1 foot high.
I guess I could have had the pipes threaded cheaper but the tool addiction is strong and I'd rather do things on my terms and on my timetable.

make sure you use thread cutting oil when you cut those threads, don't use motor oil you'll ruin the die

I have cutting oil for my drill press and tap and dies sets.

I got the 3/4 head today and it works great!

It's like the one on the far left.
I now have 2 heads and the ratchet all for under 50 bucks.

Now, What's the approx. market value?

It's not real pretty paint wise but it's functional and worked well today.
Now I have to come up with some sort of storage solution.
I don't really want it in any of my tool boxes as it won't get used much after I done plumbing stuff.
For now I just ty-wrapped the heads to the tool and shelved it.
