This winter was rough here. It is all relative but we had a bad one. My 20 year old boots were on the verge of death but...this winter killed them. I am thinking Red Wings or Wolverine boots. However, I have not shopped for boots in 20 years.
These would be general out in the garage, doing outdoor project and everyday (or so) wear boots. Not a lot of dirt work with them if any.

Any opinions?

This is one of those things you'll get one guy say he loves brand x and hates brand y, the next guy will say the opposite.

That being said, I'm on my second pair of redwings in 6 years. I wear them everyday, all day. In the garage, on concrete for 10 hours a day at work, yard work, or on the bike. Doesn't seem to matter, best boots I've had so far.

I used to blow out a set every year, if they made it even that far, before these.

Watch out tho, if it matters to you, some redwing stuff is USA, some USA of imported components, and they have some imported stuff. Don't pay redwing prices for an import.

I go with LL Bean anyday of week as lifetime replacement if not happy for any reason. They make great boots and I can vouch for their lifetime warranty as haven't had to pay for boots in longer than I care to remember.

It really depends on you and what you need them for. For actual leather work boots I have always been partial to Chippewa boots myself for non-steel towed boots and loggers. For required steel towed shoes I were Redwings that look like hiking boots and have been relatively happy with those for the kind of shoe they are. I have never been able to find anything I liked in the past so they were by far the best for that. And they do last quite well.

For just working out in the garage I actually like my Schetcher pull on gel sole canvas sneakers. They are very comfortable. Not very good for yard work or welding though.

I'm a manager in a construction environment so although I'm not out "in the trenches" anymore, I walk a lot and am in the dirt and outdoors.
I've always been partial to redwings but last Fall I bought a pair of North Face Bridgeton Boots since I'm now in an office and in meetings as well and wanted something a little dressier.
I have to say, these are some of the most comfortable boots I've worn right out of the box. They're waterproof and insulated and seem to be holding up really well.

Hope this is helpful...

I've always been a Justin guy, myself. I have extremely wide feet and they are the only boot I've found that's comfortable for me.

I've bought a few pairs of RedWings. The pair on my feet right now are more of a tactical boot, Worx brand (sold by RedWing), I think they're imported.
My usual daily boots are a traditional boot with a Goodyear welt and replaceable outsole.

I've replaced the soles, had the toe capped with a bedliner-like material (because the steel cap was wearing through the leather), and replaced the collar (that part that goes around the ankle) because it was starting to split open after about 8 years.

A good pair of boots is almost like a car. They take maintenance and an old beat up pair is not as pretty as a new pair, but if you can invest $50 now to keep them going instead of $100 on a new pair, you'll still have them in a year, instead of the new boots which will be done and ready for replacement in a year.

I am not blindly brand loyal to RedWing. I want a quality boot with a local store where I can get them serviced or repaired. RedWing offers me that. I don't know any other local boot stores with service.

I had Redwings for years and they would out last anything, but the last 2 pair I had were the worst boot I had ever owned it seemed like the longer I had them the smaller they got across the top of my foot. I ware a EE wide the last time I went to get boot's the sale's girl talked me into a pair of Caterpillar boot's and they fit great with no break in time on them

I've been wearing Red Wings for over 40 years. Started wearing them when I was having foot problems, and the podiatrist recommended them. The company has changed a lot since my first pair; you do need to know what you're buying-being import or USA made. I continue to prefer the USA made ones; they're more expensive for sure, but it seems that they just last longer. I'm positive there are many other quality boots out there, but I've never felt the need to change. Fitted properly, little or no break-in period. When I was working full time, I was on concrete 40+ hours a week, and the Red Wings held up well.

So, for some reason you weren't happy with the boots but you are recommending them?:dunno:

The only boots this guys feet go in are Red Wings.
You can buy a pair, wear them right out of the store and they are comfortable and ready to go to work.
I suggest steel toed and 3/4 high.
They will last for years.
Free laces and oiling when ever you need.
Enjoy them and baby your feet, you only have two of them.

I found a cheap pair of steel toe boots at goodwill. Put in a comfort sole and been happy for past 3 years. First year didn't do much work as I was in an office, but last 2 they have been my only pair of boots for service industry jobs.
Hey, when you pay $5 for boots, I don't get too picky. Surprised they lasted this long. When these finally die, will go back to goodwill for another. I'm not picky when it comes to boots, so goodwill works for me.

I like Red Wings, but it's important to find the design that fits you best. Improperly fitted boots won't last, and won't be as comfortable. Once you find that perfect match it's heaven.

I wore lace-up Red Wing steel toes for decades. Eventually I'd have to have them re-soled at the local Shoe Repair Store. I could go a couple of years on the original sole, and then another year or more on the resole. By then, there was nothing left of the leather due to anti-freeze, ATF, gasoline/diesel fuel, engine oil, etc. splashing on them.

I inherited a pair of pull-on steel toe work boots. Holy ****, I couldn't wait for my lace-ups to wear out. The only problem was they had an "indoor" sole, and sometimes I was pushing vehicles in snow and mud--so those smooth soles were useless. They were great indoors, though. I really loved the pull-on boots that didn't require time to lace and un-lace.

I have some imported Red Wing steel-toe shoes that look kind of like a cross between hiking boots and tennis shoes. Not overly impressed with them. They're a pain in the *** to put on, like the lace-up work boots, but they're not as comfy as casual shoes.

Now I have nerve damage in my feet from a medical condition. I have to wear cushy shoes. I hope to someday be able to get back into steel toes, but not the way my feet are now.

A buddy of mine had non-stop incurable athlete's foot. No cream or ointment would cure it. Went on for months. He was miserable and his toes looked like hell.

I told him to get rid of his boots. We threw them into the woodburning stove, and Satan came out of them, right there in the fire.

New boots, some over-the-counter ointment, three weeks later, athlete's foot is gone.

I've had just about every brand out there from Red Wings to Chippewa. Some have given me good service while others have been a total waste of my hard earned cash. For me, I do well to get a years service out of a pair before they either start falling apart or hurting my feet (I've tried every insole out there and NOTHING works for me to get more use out of a pair of boots). I always wear steel toe or composite and I like slip ons if that matters. Currently I'm wearing some Schmitts I bought at TSC that was on sale and they are going on a year old. I once paid $350 for a pair of boots (I'll leave the brand name out) that were the cats azz when new, however I didn't get 6 months use out of them before I literally walked out of the soles!!!! After that I've yet to spend more than $150 on a pair of boots as I said a year is normally the longest I can keep them, if they last longer great, but I don't put any faith in them.

Im rocking Redwing 4215 Dynaforce 6 inch boots.

Best boots I have owned. Paid a good bit for them, but they have been well worth it.

I was going through a pair of your average Wolverines, Cats, etc from your normal suppliers in about 6 months or a year. I work for a company that re-manufacturers Diesel fuel injectors and fuel pumps. Its NOT a clean job, the calibration fluid and diesel will literally eat anything it seems. If its glued, expect it not to be glued 3 months from now lol.

Redwings have been holding up great and are super comfortable.

USA Made Red Wings here.

Free oiling and laces for life of the boot. Worth the 200-300 dollars. Don't like em within 30 days they'll take them back, I exercised this myself as the first pair were too narrow at the toe box.

I have had at keast one pair of every major made in the USA boot brand over the last 23 years. I work in heavy industrial environments. The ones on my feet right now ate by far the most comfortable and durable. Chippewa!

I've been wearing Red Wing boots for 30 years now. The old saying "you get what you pay for" seems to be true in this case. Not saying that other brands can't be good too, just saying that I've never had a reason to buy anything else.

I just bought myself a pair of these last Fall and I am completely in love with them.
Pricey yes, but in the long run I'll come out ahead of the game with the replace-ability of the sole and heal. I tend to burn through the edge of the heals of my shoes before the rest of it is worn out. My first pair of Red Wings and they won't be my last.

Wore Red Wings for 25+ years. The last couple of 963's I had, the sole split 3 months into wearing them. They would not do a sole replacement, or warranty the boots. I bought some thorogoods(USA made) after that and 3yrs and many miles I'm happy with the change. It is about time to replace these though.

Danner boots all the way, made in the USA. There customer service is great and have a variety of styles to fit your needs. Most can be resoled too.

I don't think you would consider these boots anyways but I'll tell you to avoid them anyways. I have a pair of Alden Indy boots. (Model 503 I think, if not 50x) the are the ones that Harrison ford wore as a carpenter. They are great boots but very expensive and not great for outdoor work. 1. The sole is slick and will not grip very well on anything wet or at least not dry. 2. The scuff really easily, which is not a huge factor on job sites but it will make it harder to clean up. 3. Look a little to nice to mess up with work and cost too much for work as well.

Just a heads-up… If you are considering Red Wing boots and are a little patient you can save big on the retail price. I recently purchased Red Wing’s Iron Ranger boot. I started looking at them in February and they were retailing for $320. I tracked the Amazon price on 3 camels and noticed that the price fluctuated wildly in a short period of time. So I set a price watch and waited. Only took about 2 weeks and I was able to grab the boots for $209!

Good luck!

I went to a local shop a couple years ago to buy some red wings "they are a dealer". When the owner asked what I was interested in I told her. She said if I really had my heart set on Red wings she would sell me some. Then she said the last year or so she had , had many unsatisfied red wing customers and she recommended Carolina instead. I bought some and they are very comfortable

I have had Redwing and Wolverine boots. The Wolverine boots were comfortable from the first time I put them on and lasted 8 years before the leather cracked, I didn't take very good care of them. It took me almost 2 years to break in the Redwings so they were comfortable, 5 years later they are still going strong. For me.. the Wolverine boots are a better value.
