RIP Rosco Two Fister

So, I was putting down lime on my lawn and there was a clog in my tow behind spreader. Opened my toolbox and Rosco sat on top of a pile of screwdrivers and volunteered to check it out. Not sure how old Rosco was but there were a few cracks in the handle showing age. I was able to dislodge the clump of lime in short order but Rosco didn't make it back.

Good idea but I don't have a lathe and I'm not sure I can justify getting one just to resurrect old Rosco. The shank and blade are in decent enough shape so maybe I'll hang on to it in case I ever pick up a lathe and can turn a new handle for it.

Yea, if there was a bit more handle I could have ground it into a one-fister but its too short to salvage as is.

The lettering was worn down on Rosco but I think it says 'Mechanics Unbreakable USA' and I didn't apply much force at all when it snapped.
I have a Craftsman about the same size that actually smells neutral.

You dont need a lathe. I've made handles just by shaving down a block until it's sorta roundish then putting a screw into the end - take some time to get it straight - and chuck the screw in a drill motor to spin the wood against the sanding belt or disc. You'll want a sander with a table, not a handheld sander to make one two-fisted length.

I don’t own a real 2 fister, have a couple that you could grab with2 hands but nor a true 2 fister.
Couple of quick fixes.
1 Piece of dowel?
2 Flip your belt sander upside down clamp it down and grind away.
3 piece of PVC or other type of pipe, fill in with construction adhesive.

My dad, a waste-not, want-not Depression-era child, would have fixed your Rosco in a minute with a section of broom handle and some filled two-part epoxy. I grew up with screwdrivers like that…

Hmmmm, Craftsman Screwdriver Driver. As usual Stanley has numerous configurations to handle new. A number 11 wood screw and appropriate driver is is shown on one of these charts.

Too bad those things aren't full-tang! I have one and generally don't pry an awful lot with it. Great for screwing around of course.

Dang I saw one today at the Habitat but it was worse yet. The handle was melted and bent.

This one appeared to have been used as a large stir stick for unknown products. I worked on it for quite a while but it will never be mistaken for new.

I've got two of them myself.....
One of my Two-Fisters is used as a Pry Bar and the other to dig out those darn lousy weeds with really deep roots....deep like a frickin' carrot.

Works way better than my Wife's garden tool that's made to dig out weeds
The Two-Fister gets pounded into hard ground with a hammer......wiggle it around, then pry out the darn weed, roots and all

So far, I haven't been able to break mine with all of the hammering and pounding on the end of it


If I crack the handle, I'm going to figure out a way to fix it
....and use it for another 40 or so years
