I am looking or a relatively inexpensive tool for setting metric rivet nuts. The photo below shows what I need the tool for. Other names for rivet nuts are nutserts, popnuts, pemserts, and rivnuts.

This is not a tool I will use very much, but I would like to find something that works well. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Marson is definitely the way to go. But unless you're willing to fiddle with a cheap Chinese copy, the tools aren't inexpensive.

I agree that the Marson tool is the way to go. The Marson nuts are easy to find at Ace hardware.

If you buy the HF Chinese tool I'm not sure if Marson nuts work with it because they look quite a bit different.

Marson(sp) makes a good one. HF sells one, all the tool trucks sell them too.

The HF one doesn't have metric mandrels (plus it breaks if you use steel rivnuts instead of the aluminum ones it comes with).

McMaster-Carr has some installers that are inexpensive if you only need one size:

(scroll down to Wrench-Drive Rivet Nut Installation Tools).

I've had good luck just using a nut and bolt to install metric rivnuts.

TP...... if you are only working with a few, why even bother with a tool? A bolt is your tool, with a nut and washer you can wind it down and crush that insert in place,. Works just as well.

Set a few of those inserts in Volare wagon roofs (for luggage racks) that way and was just as good as any factory installation.

Just yesterday, I set a few more (1/4-20's) in the neighbour's gazebo frame work I'm repairing. (their dog continually pisses in the same corner and the bottom of the frame "melted")

i had a HF one, the stud broke after installing just a few rivets (aluminum). Then i bought a POP brand one and have been very happy with it.

+1 for the bolt and washer if you only have a few. I always set mine after using the squeeze tool with a bolt to fully compress them.

I bought the metric mandrels and tips as a set on e-bay for $15. They fit my standard Marson nut setter. You can find them on e-bay and craigslist for under $30 if you have the time to look.

As stated above, a bolt and nut will work, it just takes a bit longer.

I have the MARSON tool. Using 1/4x20 Nutserts (Steel, not Alum) I can not collapse/set them with my hands alone. I need to squuze the two levers/handles together with a large C clamp..............

I know I'm weak........but still difficult

I got the Marson from grainger, best price i found locally when i had to have one. I picked up the metric set, and actually broke it once on the M8 inserts. Worked out okay since grainger replaced it that day and gave me the new one w/ a new set of inserts. I know the tool truck versions are quite a bit more money, and are probably rebadged Marson ones anyway.

Thanks for all the advice. My immediate problem was setting some metric aluminum rivet nuts in the rear hatch in my car. I only needed to set 2 of them so i just used a bolt and nut to set them. I am ashamed that I did't think of that solution for my problem.

For the future I will probably get one of the Marson Kits.

Thanks again!!
