McMaster sells specific rivet nuts for plastics and composites (like these), but they're expensive.

Often called plus nuts. We make special mandrels for our 1442 and 1452 rivet nut tools for them as they are longer. Also have a model coming out soon (#1450) that is a whole kit just for plus nuts.

You will need to use a backup washer, these are used everyday in boat manufacturing.
