I use an old craftsman top chest with a fold up top on it. an older version of this http://community.craftsman.com/Craftsman-6-Drawer-Ball-Bearing-Chest-26-in-Wide-Red-Black-reviews . sliders no ball bearings. the same old chest that as a kid you saw one in someone you knows garage haha. find em used all day dirt cheep. It will hold all the basic things you will need to do basic service on the road. I took one of those craftsman 2xx peace kits in the plastic box and put all the sockets on rails and put the whole kit in this chest. add some pliers, screwdrivers, etc. maybe some tire plug tools, starter fluid and a lighter :). Is this just for a traveling box? or used for work?

I actually use a Stanley fat max waterproof plastic box in the back of my truck. $20 from walmart and made in Israel. Just make sure that if you fill it with 100 pounds of mechanics tools you use the side handles and not the top handle like I did:thumbup:

Heavy duty handles on the sides, locking front drawer cover so the inside doesnt get dirty, and so your tools dont fly around.

mossy boy that is just like mine and i like it for all the same reasons. the picture i linked doesnt have the same top now that i looked again, but like you said you can close the box up and keep the rain off and dirt out.

pdizzle, I am a heavy equip. mechanic. I keep up to 1/2 in that box. the truck has a diamond plate box on it that has 3/4''- 1'' drive tools in it along with some hammers pry bars etc.

I've been looking for one also. A nice used Kennedy would be great, but no luck on Craigslist yet. So far, I like this Excel for about $130 from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Excel-TB2060BBSA-Red-26-Inch-Steel-Chest/dp/B000SZWFM8/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3L1XXIE6UAGV&colid=1P5EXAJ659M6X

But I'm considering something less conventional as well...I could see loading to well over 100 pounds (the box is over 50), so maybe even wheels (I'm old!). Durable plastic (like Pelican, but less costly) would be okay.

So lots of room, durable, easily moved, and affordable...any ideas? Thanks!

my box is pretty damn heavy. I slide it to the tailgate and use that as my workbench on the job. before I went to this style of box i looked high and low for a good solution and had this box laying around so i filled it up when the plastic box the crafstman tool sets come in went **** up. this is a similar set http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00933260000P . the c man box was awesome because it was so light and i just carried the whole thing on top of a machine with me. if i was using 3/8ths drive i just slid that draw right out of the box and went to town. the handle on top is cheep plastic and it was only a matter of time before it broke and i dropped the box off a machine. it was never designed to be used the way i was so no hard feelings. I thought about building my own shell to accept the 3 plastic red drawers that came in the set and maybe hang a separate small box on each side to hold less used items so you just pull the side boxes off when you need to be more mobile. Think of it like the belt clip on a knife, just slip it onto the main box and store it in the truck untill you need to move it. The options out there are real slim pickings. if you dont want to spend a lot of $$$, and who does for a road box. the old plastic conventional carry toolboxs are hard to organize, dont hold up well, and dont hold much.

If i had a dedicated truck i would go buy a double bay top box and build a frame around that would A) protect it B) hold more stuff like jumper cables.etc, and C) allow a forklift to grab underneath it or a chain to be hooked ontop of it to move it easily were ever i wanted it. when not on a job for extended periods of time id build roller cart for it and move it into the shop corner and store things under it.

haha i have put A LOT of thought into this whole thing and been through at least 10 different setups and actually going to replace mine really soon with a very similar, but newer one ( fell off the tailgate when I drove across the site like a *******)

Ammo boxes work great, but the .50-cal cans sort of limit the length of what you can put in. There are bigger boxes available (I actually used a mortar box in my Blazer for tools), but they're harder to find locally and shipping usually kills the price on them.

4230,went down the road last winter and was replaced with a new holland t6070 elite.

How do you like the New Holland compared to the old girl? Im assuming the NH is CV transmission. Probably took some getting used to from the quad range or powershift in the 4230. Gained about 20-40 horse depending on how the 42 was set up :D

around 40 on the drawbar but more like 65 in boost through the pto. i have the 16 speed power shift. i like the tractor a lot. kind of wished i had moved up to a 7030 with cvt but this is worlds beyond the 4230 and really does everything i ask it to.

my "portable" box is a '70 CM top, it's small enough to carry packed full of tools, and big enough to hold most of what i need.

the other CM top '99 is mounted in my service truck. and has seen a lot of hard use,
a heavy loaded CM box wont last long in a truck before it self destructs.

Some of the anti-aircraft guns on ships in WWII were 20mm. Also, some Vulcan type weapons were 20mm.

I think some early A-10 ground attack aircraft had 20mm cannons in the nose.

I don't remember a 20mm recoilless rifle.

Ahh yes there is no sound in the world like the 20mm vulcan cannon on the front of an a-10. Sends chills right down your spine

I am in need of the samething. I have Scout II and a 73' CJ5. I was thinking of them Husky canvis with hinges ect. but then a easy steal for low lifes. The Kennedy cantilever is possible if I can work out an easy mount so's not to get attacted by tools if I was to roll the Scout II, locked for security and then where to mount?

since theres only a few different sizes of nuts and bolts on a bobcat, it should be simple.

all depends on how extensive the repairs are in the field.
changing pumps and drive motors are gonna take a few more tools than changing an actuator or controller

i use 5% of my tools 95% of the time, the other 5% of the time takes the other 95% of my tools.

My red tool box (like a Craftsman rally box I suppose) is about shot after 5 years on the road, I would prefer a simple metal box without drawers I can just store tool rolls in if I,m honest. The less moving parts the better for me next time.
