Road boxes?

I'm needing a well made road box for tool storage in my pickup that I can easily remove. I've looked at the John Deere and snap ons before. Mainly curious what others think about them? I used to be a fan of the montezuma cpl, still may end up with one of the 36" model crossovers, but they just aren't made like they used to be when they were made in Montezuma.

We have a 36" crossover on one of the flatbed farm pickups, my biggest complaint behind the flimsiness is the fact that the wrench pegs don't have enough room for gearwrenches.

If I can find a used snap on KRA6200F for a decent price I'll probably try to buy it, but 2800 is a little steep for a box I'm only going to have in the pickup part of the time. The extreme and John Deere road boxes look identical, any body have experience with them?

Ever consider a Pelican 0450 or a Kipper? I thought Montezuma style was the way to go, but the Pelican/Kipper might seal better.

looked at them seemed like a decent product. i think they are the box sold with a student tool set that they sell to a local college for around 2500 ,but it has tools by sunex and texton, tools of that grade .

You cannot easily remove a Snap-On road box!

The damned things weigh 300 pounds!

Yep, 300 pounds, well built and a good finish.. Mine has served Me well for over 35 years. It has old school Friction slides; so if the vehicle is parked on an incline: the drawers don't all self open at once and crash when You raise the lid.

Ball bearing slides are ok when the box has adequate detents, magnets, or latches to keep the drawers closed.. This is something I would check out before purchasing a box of any brand.

I have a 36" montezuma and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The John Deere's are the exact same, just a different color.

I have the same one in the Deere version. I've worked out of the old Montezuma CPL boxes & they were better built, but this one works really well. I've considered a Snap-On road box and may go that route if I find one cheap enough. I think Deere sells these for around $550. The smaller 30" one is $450, I think. I like the CPL boxes because the tools stay put when driving through rough fields. I have it bolted down and can take it out with a forklift in about 5 minutes.
The downsides that I found with this box are no space for gear wrenches and the locks are cheap.

I don't think ball bearing slides like the pounding in place when the truck is making long trips over rough roads.

I'm curious about road boxes myself. I'd prefer to stay away from the Montezuma styles boxes though. I usually need to have more than wrenches, sockets, and some screwdrivers.

I've thought of looking into a JD box myself. I knew it'd be cheaper than a Snap On. I saw the Extreme Tools box posted. I'm assuming it'd be close to the same as the JD box being majority of both brands products come from QCI. But does anyone know of any other options?

I steered a friend of mine to the John Deere Road Chest and he likes it. He had two 30 inch Montazuma boxes on his truck. Everyone loves the wedge boxes to start. When you go over a basic set of tools.....not so much.

Any problems with the powder coat finish on the JD chest? I've seen pictures of the powder coat on one flaking off. I used to have a wedge style (Montezuma style) of a different brand for a road box from my local Napa. It had a power coat finish. With in a year the sun had dulled the finish and it started flaking off all over. My dad has that same box and it's the same way.

This is the JD box I'm speaking of, looks like it'll be around 700-800 from my dealer. I've always had montezuma cpl's in the past and liked them, even built my own from scratch in high school, but I'm starting to get to the point where I feel too confined by them.

Does anyone really think Proto, International, John Deere or Snap-on make boxes?

Let me rephrase it for you. Proto has one made. Does that suit you? Snap-on makes their own at the Algona, Iowa Plant.

If you look at my comment earlier in the thread (comment 15) you'll notice I mentioned QCI. They're actually the manufacturer for JD, Extreme Tools, Montezuma, and a few others.

From what I can tell, this is the old waterloo design. Deere has offered basically the same road box for 15 years. For a long time they were were made by waterloo. One of the road techs had one, as far as I know still has. Seemed liked a good box. As long as the quality hasn't dropped off, I'm sure it's fine. I'll still to my kra62.

I've got a catalog and looked at it on the JD website. But does anyone know the dimensions for the drawers of the JD box? Everything I'm finding just gives the dimensions of the box itself.

I believe without the frame, the box is 33" wide so drawers are 27"-28" wide give or take. It's bigger then a standard 26" top box. The box is 18" deep so 16" deep drawere if I remember correctly.

The box is still fairly new so no problem with the finish yet. He compared the Deere box to the Snap On at the Dealership and went with the Deere. There was both in use at the store so he got to compare them in there working clothes. Who knows when a used snap on will come up and he could order a new Deere box and price was a big consideration.

That's been my thinking behind it

Any ideas on the height on the drawers?

Those with road boxes, how are you setting them up?

My current road box is crammed full of stuff. That's why I'm looking for something bigger. I search for a few threads on here on road boxes. I've been trying to search for set up ideas as well. One thing I've been considering is wrench rolls. For sockets I use some Ernst rails. I also made some small metal boxes to hold my socket sets too. As far as the rest of it I don't really have anything so far.

I'd like the snap on but by the time I paid for it I'd be over half way to a custom built service bed

As an ag tech in a john deere shop we have guys using different set ups, but 90% are the snapon. Im not on the road full time but when i am loaded in a truck there is not a minute i regret having it! the newer john deere box is not the same as the one say 10 years ago, same set up yes, but build quality and durability not even close. new ones are lighter and thinner material, cheaper slides, lighter drawers. Not one of the guys i work with have a complaint about the snapon. Just depends on what you are putting it in for a vehicle. One of our main road techs is actually looking at getting a vidmar for the service body just because you can utilize more of the compartment instead of wasting the extra room to open the lids!
