ok...so you have stubborn nut or bolt - i hear lots of folks saying they put a torch to it - how does that work - do you heat the fastner itself? - or the area around it? - and how hot? - should you then try to hit while it is hot, or does letting it cool down break the bond such that you should wait - and i assume that spraying penetrant should happen when it is hottest, right? - thanks!! ED :headscrat

Heat up the fastener to a dull red and then wrench it off. Heat expands metal so heat up the part that you want to make bigger to loosen it (typically a frozen nut). Don't spray penetrating oil on it when it is hot, it will just evaporate and cool the part but do nothing.

I had great luck with this ! Broke a socket on my daughters VW Bus then got out the propane torch heated nut the best I could but my guess is heating nut and stud would work just fine also . Like you said break the bond .
then just your wrench should be fine .

You don't want to heat the stud just the nut. The reason is you want to expand the nut away from the stud just expanding both of them wont help you much.

Careful with heating the stud,if you try to turn it while its hot it may twist off.Up here in the great white salty north we have great luck with heating nuts and brake bleeders and fittings cherry red and then dousing them with cold water.The expansion and contraction from the hot and cold works really well,usually you can crack the fastener loose with a wrench and the turn it with your fingers.

funny...it is stuck bleeder valve that prompted this post...so got it...heat the valve and not the caliper into which it is screwed...douse it with cold water...and then put a vice grip to it (rounded it several turns ago...)!!

There are actually two different techniques being talked about right now which is probably confusing at best to you:

1. Thermal expansion
2. Thermal 'shocking'

Thermal expansion is heating up an external piece to expand it away from an internal piece. eg a nut that is tight on a bolt would require you to heat the nut, to expand it from the bolt. Take that bolt and thread it into a housing and it would then be the housing that required heating to help get the bolt back out. In this case, your example would be the wrong way around. Having said this, I don't know how much heat you can safely put into the caliper due to the seals and stuff. They are obviously able to handle braking temps but a torch should run quite a lot hotter than that.

Thermal 'shocking' is putting the entire joint through a very rapid heat cycle. As said above, torching and then dousing with water is an effective way to do this. This rapid expansion and contraction basically shocks the whole joint and helps break the bond between the two pieces. This can also be achieved by hitting the work pieces with a hammer and/or punch. It's amazing how much difference some vibration makes to any tight fitting, whether it's threaded or press fit.

In this case I would go with the heat shocking process. Also, penetrating oil does not usually make much difference on pipe thread fittings anyway. The threads are too tightly engaged for the solvents to break anything down or the lubricants to lubricate anything (if it is pipe thread anyways).

Also, if you have or can borrow a pipe wrench or some Knipex Cobras, I find both work much better than vise-grips.

garfunkle24 - many thanks - this is very helpful - at the moment, the caliper is broken down and so this is just the housing - the pistons, seals, springs, etc are all out - i'll give the bleeder valve a few taps with the hammer and try the pipe wrench - if still no go, i'll try the thermal shocking method - thanks again!! ED :thumbup:
